Accessible via a well-maintained forest road, this dispersed camping area sits directly along the South Fork Shenandoah River within George Washington National Forest. The Forest Service manages approximately a dozen primitive sites, each equipped with fire pits and accessible by both drive-in and walk-in methods. Larger RVs can reach the site at the end of the road, while additional walk-in spots extend along the riverbank.
The dirt sites make staking down gear straightforward, though conditions change dramatically after heavy rains when river mud can render sites unusable. Campers collect firewood from downed trees throughout the area. A boat launch sits in the middle of the camping zone, creating regular daytime traffic from paddlers and anglers. Jack W. notes it's a "beautiful spot right on the river with fire pits."
Noise from across the river can be significant, with some visitors reporting loud music continuing into early morning hours from private property. The limited number of sites fills quickly during peak seasons. Basic amenities include vault toilets and a dump station, though campers should pack toilet paper and practice Leave No Trace principles. Cell service reaches the area, and both pets and alcohol are permitted.
This spot works well for river enthusiasts and campers comfortable with primitive conditions who don't mind occasional noise disturbances.
