Rock Creek Campground — Okanogan Wenatchee National Forest

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Situated along the Chiwawa River beyond Lake Wenatchee, Rock Creek Campground draws a different crowd than the more widely known Rock Creek along the Icicle River closer to Leavenworth. Worth noting: at least one recent reviewer flagged that older reviews and photos on this listing may reflect that other campground, so first-time visitors should confirm they have the right location before making the drive. The campground sits within Wenatchee National Forest, and campers planning a broader trip can browse campgrounds around Wenatchee National Forest to compare options in the area.

The campground is primarily designed as a horse camp, with individual fenced areas for horses and direct trail access for riders. After 8 p.m., all sites open to the general public. Sites accommodate RVs up to roughly 26 feet, though there are no hookups and no drinking water on site. Tent campers have additional options following site expansions completed in recent winters. Hosts have been on-site in past seasons, helping direct campers to firewood and keeping an eye on the grounds.

The campground closes seasonally, and at least one visitor arrived in fall to find it already shut for the year. Planning around the open season matters here. Nearby campgrounds worth checking if Rock Creek is full or closed include Chiwawa Horse Campground to the north, Riverbend Campground to the south, and Schaefer Creek Campground to the northwest. At $18 per night with no pets allowed, this campground is best suited to equestrians and self-sufficient campers comfortable hauling their own water.

Quiet, Remote, Clean

This is for the Rock Creek Campground along the Chiwawa River beyond Lake Wenatchee. The previous reviews and pictures are for the Rock Creek Campground along the Icicle River closer to Leavenworth.

I visited this campground in the fall (2023) on a scouting trip for next years camping (Spring 2024). The campground was already closed for the season. Upon visiting I found the campground as the title describes and was desirable enough to add to my list of options.

Close to town with Horse Trails!

Rock Creek Campground is a great place that feels close to town! I usually park in the day use area and go trail riding but I have camped as well. It's a very beautiful place and the campsites feel spacious.

Horse camp

It's a nice campground thats not too well known about. Not many people are usually there. They have individual fenced areas for the horses and lots of trails for riding.

Best spot in the area

This is my regular spot and have been camping there for years, in fact I have two trips in already this year. Lots of campsites and they added more over last winter for tents. This is a horse camp designed for riders and for them to camp but after 8 pm all sites are open to the public. It is RV friendly up to about 26’ and has no hookups of any kind and no drinking water, and I would love to see someone boat in…lol these items need to be updated . The hosts , Randy and his wife ( I always forget her name ) are great people who will let you know where the firewood is and keep an eye on your site.

Vibe, Location, Serenity

This is a solid spot, fun to find and a great mix of smallish-medium campground size, tall mix of trees, nice area full of near-legendary trails and two nearby campgrounds (Cold Creek and Sunset) that you can go to if Rock Creek is full. I would get here on a Friday night, hike the nearby Tarbell (right from this campsite), Yacolt Burn or Bells Mountain trails to your hearts content Saturday, and relax Saturday night into Sunday. Or jump on the Trillium Mountain Bike trail. This place is a little harder to find because a lot of the Forest Service road signs get vandalized and taken down, but even I found it (through copious trail signs like the one pictured).

Nice clean campsite

The campsite was nice and clean when we went to check it out. It's in the woods, with plenty of room between sites, but is wide open so if it was full you may not get as much privacy as with other sites further down the road.

Worth the Drive

This campsite is at the very end of the dirt road. Pass all the others and come here!

So many campsites on both sides of the creek. There is even a swimming hole. This campground is part of the Icicle Gorge trail, a beautiful 3 mile loop around the river.
