Basalt columns rise directly from the camping area at Frenchman Coulee Dispersed Camping, a Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife site within campgrounds around Quincy Lakes that draws rock climbers, hikers, and overnight campers in roughly equal measure. The access road is well-maintained from the highway, though reaching higher sites requires high clearance, as sharp rock outcroppings make navigation difficult in low-slung vehicles, especially after dark. Two distinct camping zones split the area: a smaller, more atmospheric section near the basalt "Feathers" columns, and a larger open area with pit toilets farther down the road.
Crowds follow a predictable rhythm here. Weekdays and off-season visits tend to be quiet enough to hear birds in the surrounding canyon, while summer weekends bring climbers, day hikers, and car campers in numbers that can make the main area feel lively by evening. A waterfall is visible across the valley from several sites. There is no potable water on-site, so campers need to arrive self-sufficient. Campfires are permitted, pets are allowed, and cell service is available.
"On clear nights you can see all the stars," notes billie J., a regular visitor who camps here both solo and with family. The site sits only a couple of miles from Interstate 90, which makes it a practical overnight stop without feeling like a highway pullout. Bring your own toilet paper. Campers who want a more remote setup nearby might consider Frenchman Coulee Backcountry Campsites to the west, which trades the road access for a quieter footprint.
