More of a recreation area

We came here on a Sunday in July, expecting folks would be on their way by late evening so we could get some sleep. This spot is big for off-roading, which was anticipated, but what we didn’t anticipate was folks blasting music and flashing lights in their atv’s until 1am, making loops all the way down the dunes and onto sites where folks were pitching tents. Also not the best place if you have a larger rig or don’t have 4WD, but if you’re up for it you can scout ahead on foot to see where the sand is firm enough to drive off road. Bathrooms were in rough shape, and you can’t lock the door. A fine place to build a fire and do some primitive campfire cooking in a self-made rock ring if you’re in a pinch, but really weird energy here. (Maybe this is a reach, too, but as two queer people who have been camping across the country at dispersed sites, this was the ONLY one where we did not feel safe.)

What a cool place to spend a night

Hard packed sandy road takes you out here. We arrived way after dark. Beware of soft sand on the shoulders but overall 40+ foot rigs can make it as the road is very wide. Head back 2-3 miles and you’ll see tons of other people. We just parked right off the road for the least risk of getting stuck in the sand. Woke up to an amazing sun rise and were able to let the dogs hang off leash before everyone started getting on their ATVs. For sure a cool place to just drink coffee and people watch in the sand!

Moses Lake

I love this place because it’s so spacious and they have a playground for children to play. There’s a lot of shooting stars at night. But the lake was a bit muddy and had lots of grown seaweed.

Adventure in the Sand

If you want a place to bring all of your motor toys for a fun long weekend in October? Get over to Moses Lake, WA where you will find Mud Flats and Sand Dunes!

Open Camping directly on the Flats, you and your whole crew can set up base just off the gravel road and right on the water. Bring your boats, paddle boards, and of course your ATV’s for an adventure no one will forget.

Although we took the Toy Hauler and parked nearer the larger, more advanced dunes for some real off-roading, you are allowed tents with open camping and the Dunes offer a wide range of difficulty levels, from beginner to Advanced.

Although the Lake is bitter cold during the month of October, and you might not feel like going for a refreshing dip, if you have a little boat or Kayak you can take in the sunrise, or sunset, over the sand for a breathtaking and romantic venture. If you choose to paddle board I would suggest a light wetsuit to be packed with your usual camping apparel.

Summertime there is generally decent but can get a little crowded. If you want to be the only people on the Flats I would suggest going in the off season for a real treat!

As it is governed by the State, alcohol is prohibited, which makes this a pretty neat family vacation spot. I know it is for me!
