Free camping in George Washington National Forest comes with tradeoffs, and Little Fort Campground makes most of them clear from the start. The campground sits within Fort Valley and provides a handful of first-come, first-served sites, each with a picnic table and fire ring on a gravel pad. There is no water and no electricity on site. A vault toilet serves the entire campground, and campers are expected to pack out their trash.
The site layout gives each spot some separation from its neighbors. A running stream passes through the area, and some sites have direct access to the Peters Mill Run/Taskers Gap OHV System, making the campground a practical base for ATV and Jeep trail use. That access cuts both ways. Dirt bike and ATV noise is a consistent part of the daytime experience here, and during hunting season, gunfire in the distance is common. Campers not planning to use the OHV trails should factor that in.
Road access is manageable for a standard 2WD vehicle, but reviewers caution against bringing large trailers. The site is not well-suited to RVs. Fort Valley Ranch is a nearby alternative for campers who need hookups or more infrastructure. For those with camping near Woodstock on their itinerary, Little Fort sits a short drive east of town. No pets are permitted. This campground works best for tent campers and OHV users who want free, no-frills access to the trail network.
