Several campgrounds near Broadway, Virginia provide cabin rentals with varying levels of amenities and comfort. Harrisonburg-Shenandoah Valley KOA offers year-round cabin accommodations with electricity, basic furnishings, and outdoor fire rings. Lewis Mountain Campground in Shenandoah National Park features cabins with queen-size beds, private bathrooms with showers, and provided towels and toiletries. According to one visitor, "We stayed in one of the cabins at Lewis Mountain, which had a queen size bed and bathroom with a small shower. Each cabin has a sheltered area and fire pit for cooking and eating." Andy Guest/Shenandoah River State Park Campground provides both rustic cabins and climate-controlled options with fully equipped kitchens, making it suitable for winter stays.

Cabin types range from basic camping cabins to deluxe units with multiple bedrooms. The climate-controlled cabins at Shenandoah River State Park include two-bedroom layouts with queen beds and bunkbeds that can accommodate families. One camper noted, "The cabins are basic, but just enough that you need. Electricity, water on site, fan, lots of windows for sticky nights, 2 bunk beds sleeping 4 total, and a table with 4 chairs." Pet policies vary by location, with Lewis Mountain Campground prohibiting pets in cabins while Luray RV Resort and Harrisonburg KOA welcome them. Most locations require advance reservations, especially during peak summer months and fall foliage season when cabins book quickly. Quiet hours are typically enforced after 10 PM at all locations.

Most furnished cabins provide beds with mattresses but require guests to bring their own linens, pillowcases, and towels. Kitchen facilities vary significantly between locations, from basic setups with mini-fridges and microwaves to fully equipped kitchens with cookware, utensils, and dishware. Shenandoah River State Park cabins include "cooking utensils and cutlery, dish soap, toilet paper, and paper towels," according to a recent visitor. Firewood can be purchased at most campgrounds, though Shenandoah National Park locations strictly prohibit bringing outside wood. Camp stores at most locations stock essential supplies, ice, and limited groceries, though visitors planning extended cabin stays should bring food and supplies from larger towns nearby. Cell service is limited or non-existent at many cabin locations, particularly those within Shenandoah National Park.

Lewis Mountain Campground — Shenandoah National Park

      Great little campground

Great spot! Was first-come first-serve - we got there mid-afternoon on a Monday and it'd filled up by about 5pm. Clean & well-stocked facilities. All the sites are pretty close together/little seclusion, but those across from us (13) probably offered the most seclusion in the upper loop there. Firewood from the camp store (3rd party - not NPS) was $10/bundle, which was kind of expensive - will probably bring my own treated firewood next time. Very pretty sunset/sunrise. Good grassy/gravel spots for tenting.

Loft Mountain Campground — Shenandoah National Park

      Pleasant Respite

Great campground! Facilities were well-stocked and clean. Stayed at a walk-in site (005), which was nice because it's a very short walk from the reserved parking spot and it's on the outside of the ring so comparatively secluded. All traffic entering the campground passes by it, which might be annoying to some (esp. during peak season I'd bet) but we didn't find it disturbing. The site also has its own bear box (adjacent sites 006 & 007 have to share one). One note - the site map shows a separate trail going right from the parking spot to the site, but you actually have to walk through site 006 to get to it. Also, we learned that the camp store is not run by the NPS, and the kid who was running the store does not provide great service, to say the least; he was very rude when there was a credit card snafu, and made us go down to the wayside store to get our refund even though he was the one who double-charged us. Don't blame NPS though! Also, firewood is kind of expensive ($10/bundle); consider bringing your own treated/kiln-dried from a nearby store before entering the park!

      #1 Rock Tavern River Kamp

I fear that yurt glamping may have ruined me against tent camping again! This was absolutely lovely. We stayed in the painted horse yurt. Cozy, comfy, lots of amenities. The only downside here is the sulfur odor the water in the bathroom has, but it is very good for your skin at least! I’d stay here again for sure.

      Shenandoah River Outfitters Camp Outback

      Off-peak small RV camping

Stayed here for 2 weekday nights in mid-October, late season. Nice & quiet. Warm showers, clean bathrooms, nice staff.

There was some vehicle activity with vehicles as they were still running river trips.

      Very pleasant.

      Gooney Creek Campground

Quite the dump and almost no one around to talk to. There is a bathroom with running water, flushing toilets, and a shower. But it is cramped and not attractive. Most of the sites are right underneath the freeway, and very noisy. Primitive sites away from the road noise are nothing more than a wide area of the dirt road.

      The Cove Campground

      Excellent Campground

Was looking for a last-minute getaway on a busy weekend, and they seemed the best option.  I've always associated private campgrounds with crowding and sites on top of each other.  I couldn't have been more wrong about The Cove.  There is more wooded space between sites than in many National Parks.

Some sections are best accessed via 4WD, which I think is a great way to keep things from getting too crowded.

Such a huge diversity of types of sites, from lakeside to wooded, to open fields.  They have something for everyone.

The bathrooms are ok.  Other than the shower area and the reception, most toilets are pit toilets.  If you want to be walking distance to showers, make sure to book sites near them.  For most sites, it's going to be a hike or a drive.

And on top of that, they have a beach for the kids, boat rentals, and a range.

This was our first visit, but we will definitely be coming back.

    Guide to Broadway

Cabin camping near Broadway, Virginia offers access to both the Shenandoah Valley and Shenandoah National Park. The area sits at elevations ranging from 1,000 feet in the valley to over 3,000 feet along Skyline Drive, with seasonal temperature variations of 30°F to 85°F depending on altitude. During fall foliage season, cabins situated at higher elevations provide earlier color viewing opportunities than valley locations.

    What to do

Swimming and tubing: At Luray RV Resort on Shenandoah River, visitors can take advantage of river access for water activities. "The ride down the river from one end of the park to the other is around 30 minutes," notes Joe, adding that "they even have a spot for you to get in and swim."

Mountain biking: Andy Guest/Shenandoah River State Park Campground maintains trails for various skill levels. "Park offers very doable hiking and mountain biking options for beginners," states Laura N. The park has "tons of trails, wildlife and activities in and near the park."

Stargazing: Cabin locations at higher elevations provide excellent night sky viewing. At Big Meadows Campground, Rachel M. mentions they "love to camp in Big Meadows - and for the star watching at night." Another camper, Veronica S., notes "the fireflies are spectacular. At dusk, the ground shimmers, and then after they disperse, you will still see them flit by the tent throughout the night."

    What campers like

Privacy levels: Many campers appreciate sites with natural buffers. At Loft Mountain Campground, Annie B. notes, "The sites were fairly close, but separated by trees, so you felt private. You could hear people on the other side of the trees, but no one was loud and it was very quiet and peaceful at night!"

Winter amenities: Some cabins remain accessible year-round with heating systems. Carol B. reported staying at Big Meadows "the last night of the season (Nov30)" when temperatures dropped to "a low of 14F" and was "very happy for the nearby heated restrooms with hot running water."

Wildlife encounters: The region offers opportunities to safely observe wildlife from cabins. Lexa L. from Lewis Mountain Campground mentions, "My husband and I brought along our 10 month old daughter and 2 German Shepherds" and "came across numerous friendly backpackers!" Other campers report regular deer sightings with Kim L. noting the "busy traffic in park but nice trails are accessible from campground."

    What you should know

Availability patterns: Most cabin facilities fill quickly during peak seasons. At Lewis Mountain, Danielle V. warns, "Reservations are first-come, first-served, which makes it a bit tricky. Out of the 31 sites (including host site), only 3 remained when we arrived at about 1:45 PM on a Friday afternoon, and those remaining filled up within the hour."

Internet connectivity: Cell service varies significantly by location and carrier. Dale Y. at Harrisonburg-Shenandoah Valley KOA reports "Cell signal and camp wifi are bad. I was just able to get a decent signal with Starlink by carefully pointing at a small gap between trees."

Weather considerations: Mountain locations experience rapid weather changes. John B. mentions about Shenandoah River State Park: "We stayed here on the night of December 11, 2020. No problem finding a spot, campground was about half full when we got there around 4pm. Water and electrical available at all the spots even though it was winter."

    Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Several campgrounds feature dedicated children's areas. Casey L. advises about Luray RV Resort: "If you have kids definitely get closer to the play ground, you won't regret it! Bathhouse was clean, very well manicured campground, amazing views of the mountains and riverfront access for tubing."

Educational programs: Look for ranger-led activities that engage children. Kim L. notes Big Meadows has a "nice amphitheater with interesting ranger programs" and is "meticulously clean with daily restroom cleaning and trash pick up."

Swimming opportunities: Natural swimming areas provide family recreation. Sarah C. at Rivers Edge Campground appreciates this "small, comfortable, family run campground that has enough amenities to keep the littles entertained and adults relaxing" noting "they have an honest to goodness swimming hole!"

    Tips from RVers

Site leveling: Check campground reviews for level pad information. At Harrisonburg-Shenandoah Valley KOA, Sara R. comments, "Hookups were well positioned. WiFi worked pretty well. Overall a great KOA."

Winter accessibility: Some cabin locations remain open year-round with services. Kathy L. describes Harrisonburg KOA as having "clean, full RV hookups, easy in and out" and being "about 3 miles off highest 81, and no highway noise at all."

Store proximity: Plan for supply runs since on-site stores vary in inventory. Matt S. notes about Spacious Skies Shenandoah Views, "Less than 20-minutes from Shenandoah National Park and Luray Caverns" making it convenient to restock supplies from town while staying in a cabin.
