Reservations are available at Gooney Creek Campground, a family-run spot open from April 1 through November 15 outside Front Royal, Virginia, where multiple sites sit directly on the banks of Gooney Creek. The campground partially underlies a highway overpass at its entrance, which creates noticeable road noise near the front sites. Campers who book spots further back, closer to the swimming hole, report significantly less highway sound, with the creek itself muffling much of what remains.
The creek is the main draw. Campers can wade or hike upstream to a swimming hole accessible only to registered guests, and a second, shallower swimming area sits further up the trail. Anglers spot fish in the water regularly. Amy F. notes "multiple campsites right along the creek," and the creekside sites come with fire rings and picnic tables. The campground also has a small camp store, a laundry area, a dish sink, and a free little library near the bathhouse.
Facilities are functional rather than polished. The bathhouse delivers hot showers and reviewers consistently call it clean, though the aesthetic is rustic, with peeling paint in places. Electric, water, and sewer hookups are available for RVs, along with a dump station and WiFi. One reviewer notes that rigs longer than 25 feet will likely have difficulty fitting. The campground is also pet-friendly, and a resident cat named Puppycat has been spotted near the entrance road.
The location works well for paddlers. Gooney Creek flows into the Shenandoah River, and a public boat launch is within walking distance of the campground. Andy Guest/Shenandoah River State Park Campground lies a few miles west, and Mountainview RV Campground is nearby to the northeast for those comparing options in the area. Shenandoah National Park's north entrance is roughly three miles away, making this a practical base for day trips into the park.
Weekends fill up during busy seasons, so calling ahead is advisable. Requesting a site toward the back of the property, away from the overpass, gives the best chance of a quieter stay.
