Tent camping near Speedwell, Virginia ranges from primitive backcountry sites to walk-in tent campgrounds with basic amenities, across national forest land and state parks. Scales Trailhead Basecamp offers primitive tent camping with drive-in and hike-in access, while New River Trail State Park's Millrace Campground provides walk-in tent sites with basic amenities. Tent campers can also find options at Chestnut Knob Shelter along the Appalachian Trail, which accommodates both tent and shelter camping.

Most tent sites in the area feature basic amenities with varying levels of development. The primitive sites at Scales Trailhead include toilets but lack drinking water, requiring campers to bring their own supply or filter from nearby sources. New River Trail State Park offers drinking water, picnic tables, and toilets, though no showers are available at most locations. Many tent campgrounds in the region permit fires, with some providing firewood for purchase. Access roads to more remote tent sites may require high-clearance vehicles, particularly after rain when conditions can become muddy and challenging for standard passenger cars.

Tent campers in the Speedwell area often enjoy proximity to water features, hiking trails, and relative seclusion from developed areas. The New River provides opportunities for paddling, fishing, and scenic tent camping along its banks. Many tent sites offer good shade coverage, which provides relief during summer months when temperatures can climb. The Appalachian Trail and Virginia Creeper Trail are accessible from several tent camping areas, making these locations ideal for hikers seeking multi-day adventures. According to one visitor, "Most campsites are large, very shaded, along a beautiful treelined road, and surrounded by mountains. There is no drinking water, picnic tables, or even pit toilet, so come prepared."

From check in to our stay, large big rig drive through lot. Quiet and clean park. Even had pizza and delicious wings delivered right to our coach. Next time through we hope to stay again.

Epic Spot Near Iron Mountain and Rush Trails

I wandered a bit and took a left up a gravel road near where the sites indicated were located and just drove for a few miles. Found an awesome spot with a fire pit and lush surroundings. The road was unpaved (but as are all to the best spots) and there were definitely some large rocks and potholes to navigate. Would suggest higher raised vehicle. Saw nobody else and felt like I had my own slice of paradise.

      Pioneer Village

      Nice place

Owner is friendly, people staying here consist of workers and retired people for the most part so the people are very quiet, beautiful river running through the end of the campground and a nice little hiking trail and a wide open area for kids to run and play. Only “bad” part is the road noise you are about 200 yards off that highway and can here it all day and night! But if your like me and don’t mind you will love it here!

      Raccoon Branch Campground

      Great Off-Grid Camping

This is a small campground but the sites are very spacious. Our site (6) backed up to the creek and trail. There is no power or water on this side of the campground, but there is a water spigot by the bathrooms. There is also a water hose for filling tanks by the dump station and trash dumpster. *Word of caution, bring your own water because it was yellow/brown while we were there. The bathrooms were clean, but on our last day there one of the toilets and the sink was clogged in the ladies room. There are two bathroom buildings at this site.

      Stony Fork Campground

      Hidden Gem

What a great find! Private sites, nice walking areas, and great hosts. Top it off with clean bathrooms with great showers and this was a win for us. It may not be suitable for bigger rigs but for our 22’ van, it was perfect.

      Boone KOA

Nice overnight stay at Boone KOA

The campground was full but very quiet. The campers are stacked into the hillside and are very close to each other, but it was still a peaceful overnight experience. The office staff were friendly and the restrooms and showers were clean and always stocked. It’s nice that it feels like it’s out in the mountain countryside, but is just right outside of downtown. A great place to stay if you’re coming in for an ASU home game.

    Guide to Speedwell

Tent campsites near Speedwell, Virginia feature a mix of primitive and developed options across elevations ranging from 1,500 to over 4,000 feet. The region experiences distinct seasonal weather patterns with summer temperatures reaching the 80s and winters dropping below freezing. Many campsites require significant planning as water sources can be limited and road access varies dramatically between locations.

    What to do

River adventures: The New River offers excellent paddling opportunities with multiple access points. At New River Yacht Club, visitors find "waterfront tent sites so you can enjoy a weekend at the water," with rentals available to "make the most of your stay" according to reviewer Jake C.

Hiking excursions: The Appalachian Trail connects with multiple camping areas around Speedwell. Near Chestnut Knob Shelter, hikers enjoy "great views over Burkes Garden (nicknamed God's Thumbprint)" as Brandon W. notes, making it "a great shorter hike" accessible with dogs.

Tubing trips: Float experiences range from 1-3 hours depending on water levels. Riverside Canoe and Campground offers a unique setup where "you can rent a tube to place a cooler inside of so you can tube down the river with beverages and snacks in tow," and Julie L. adds that "the end of the rafting experience puts you right there back at the campsite."

    What campers like

Natural light shows: The rural setting offers exceptional stargazing and wildlife viewing. At Dusty Trails Outfitters, campers witness remarkable evening displays as Kirsten J. describes: "As darkness set in, the fireflies across the river began to light up, like festive lights. Not just a few hundred, but thousands of them, in the most amazing natural light show I have ever seen."

River sounds: Several tent sites near Speedwell provide riverside camping with natural white noise. RL mentions that at Millrace Campground, "The river sounds amazing at night. You have to walk everything into the campground from the parking area, but it's not a long walk so you can still bring all of your 'car camping' luxuries."

Privacy between sites: Many campgrounds feature natural separation between sites. At Dusty Trails Outfitters, Kirsten J. notes, "We never heard them and could hardly see them through the brush that separates the campsites," describing neighboring campers over 150 feet away.

    What you should know

Road conditions: Access to remote sites can require specialized vehicles. At Scales Trailhead Basecamp, Jon M. warns the road is "rocky" and requires "High clearance 4wd," adding it's "Not ADV friendly, unless you're very adventurous." Another reviewer confirms the drive takes "probly 45 mins from the road to the campground."

Water availability: Plan to bring your own water for primitive sites. At Dusty Trails Outfitters, Kirsten J. advises: "Bring water (or a pump) - and camping chairs. The picnic table is perfect - but we like to sit around the fire and being so close to the river, the terrain is uneven as the area suffers from periodic flooding."

Toilets and facilities: Facility types vary widely between campgrounds. Brad M. notes that at New River Trail State Park there are "no showers but there is water and pit toilets. The camp sites were very clean." RL adds that there are "only pit toilets which can be a little funky, but it is what it is."

    Tips for camping with families

Carrying gear: Most walk-in sites require planning for transporting equipment. Crystal C. explains that at New River Trail State Park, "You will be required to carry your things into your site, however there is a nice paved walking area for you to do so. My site was close to the main entrance, so no biggie!"

Wildlife encounters: Prepare children for potential animal sightings. Jay N. mentions that at Scales Trailhead Basecamp, "Our favorite parts are the beautiful views, wild ponies, & it's (usually) relatively quiet!" Another camper was reminded "that we were in bear country and bears had been spotted on this road days earlier."

Local exploration: Several historic and natural attractions exist near camping areas. At New River Alleghany Access, Todd T. reports, "We enjoyed hiking. The location also had four bars of Verizon LTE. Amazing!" This connectivity allows families to research nearby attractions while maintaining contact.

    Tips from RVers

Site selection: RV options are limited but available at select locations. At New River Alleghany Access, Jennifer K. notes specific full-hookup sites: "Sites with full hookups: 3, 7, [8, 12, 13, 14, 15 near bath house] 18, 19, 20" and confirms the "Bath house was nice and clean."

Alternative accommodations: When RV sites aren't available, consider cabin options. Riverside Canoe and Campground offers "camping cabins located on the hill behind the store" that Julie L. describes as "so quiet & offered a beautiful view of the river from the picnic table."
