Zion Hwy 9 Dispersed Camping

Hikers and sightseers staging trips into Zion National Park use this free BLM dispersed area along Highway 9 as a practical base, with access to the park entrance a short drive west. The access road is paved but potholed, and campers with larger rigs report navigating it without issue as long as they take it slowly. After rain, mud can become a real concern, so checking conditions before arrival is worth the effort.

Sites sit relatively close together, and the area draws crowds during peak season. A visit in mid-May found the designated spots fully occupied, with some campers spilling into informal pullouts down the road. Arriving with a backup plan in mind is practical advice, not just a precaution. Cell service is available, and campfires and pets are both permitted.

The area faces open terrain that catches sunrise and sunset light across the surrounding landscape. "Very quiet place to stay near to the entrance of Zion Park," notes Jérémy D., who also highlights the visibility of both sunrise and sunset from camp. Nearby BLM dispersed options include BLM 71A Dispersed near Zion (Route 9) and Zion scenic byway dispersed camping, which can serve as overflow or alternatives when this area fills. Campers planning a longer stay in the region can browse places to camp near Mount Carmel Junction for a wider range of options.

Campers regularly cited this free dispersed camping area for its proximity to Zion and scenic views. The rough access road requires slow driving but is manageable for most RVs, though crowding during peak season may limit site options.

Good place, but super crowded in May

I don’t have much to add on top of the other reviews besides that this place was extremely crowded when I went in the middle of May. I was unable to find a site in the actual camping area and had to settle for a non-designated spot down the road. The sites are also pretty close together, so it isn’t the most private place in the world.

Still a beautiful and convenient area for dispersed camping if you can find a spot, but I recommend having a decent back-up plan if you want to camp here.

Really nice

Very quiet place to stay near to the entrance of Zion Park. Access to the dispersed Campground is a little bit rough but if you go slowly it’s ok. You can see very beautiful sunset and sunrise. I really recommend this place ! Can be really muddy after rain so be careful about that.

Great spot!!

So close to Zion this is a great free camping spot. The access road is a bit bumpy as the pavement is potholed but no trouble in our Class C. Lots of spots to choose from and some great views to be had. Highly recommend
