The road climbs in tiers, with a large, flat lower section accessible to big rigs, including fifth wheels up to 33 feet, and progressively rougher terrain as drivers push higher. Stone fire pits mark where campsites cluster at each level, giving the area more structure than most dispersed spots.
The tiered layout shapes how crowding plays out. Lower sections, which are more sheltered from wind, tend to fill first, particularly on weekends and during peak season. Campers who arrived late have reported pulling into multiple spots before finding an open one. Upper levels have more exposed sightlines toward the mountains and Moab in the distance, but the road gets rocky and narrow, and 2WD vehicles have struggled there in some conditions. Cell service is available but inconsistent, with Verizon and AT&T both working well in certain spots and dropping to one bar in others.
Wind and dust are the most consistent complaints across reviews. One reviewer noted the dust "started to cover our counters and floors," making ventilation a real tradeoff at higher elevations. A Maverick station on the east side of Moab provides free dump services and potable water, which matters given the lack of on-site amenities. Campfires are permitted, pets are welcome, and there is no fee.
