Behind the Rocks With my Friends

Flat, a few trees, no toilet or fire ring. The area filled up throughout the night and the people were close by . Everyone was cool when we were there. Bring a WAG bag to protect the desert. Not much privacy.

Nice Spot, but BUSY

Spent a week here while I was visiting Moab. The road coming in is veryyy bumpy and rocky, but 2WD accessible with patience. For my first couple days, I camped almost exactly at the coordinates provided here. Not a bad spot, but I had tons of neighbors really close by, and they were loud. Verizon had 2-3 bars, though, so that was nice at least. Really struggled with finding a place to pee, as there's not a lot of tree coverage and a bunch of other campers nearby.

For the rest of the week, I moved to another spot a little closer to the entrance (38°25'23.7"N 109°26'60.0"W),,) and it was a lot more private. Really recommend this spot if you can snag it. Verizon was only one bar, though. Still had loud neighbors for a couple of nights, but at least they were further away.

Beautiful, but booked

Rough road, 2WD is fine. Flatter spaces, good for RVs, are farther back. Only stayed one night because organizers of some Mad Moose race kicked us out to prep (we drove in the dark and missed any signs). Seems like a popular event space, so probably a good idea to check for happenings in advance (and plan ample time for prep!)

Off the beaten path, panorama views

There are a few different camps to choose from with a long driveway to make it more private. We got here early about 3 o’clock on a Saturday however, most of the sites were already taken so the site that we ended up staying at the driveway was a little washed out and parts of the actual camping area were washed out. The views were 360 panorama views mountain ranges desert and red rocks. Overall, I would stay here again, but preferably at a different site.

Great spot!

This is an amazing place to come and get away from all the people in Moab! Beautiful place to set up and plenty of room to spread out and have a private area! In a valley with little tree cover so it can be a little windy but nothing to ruin your day! Would recommend, we had a easy time finding a stop in early May on a Friday Evening

Beautiful spot close to Moab

We ended up camping multiple times in different spots. The best spot backed right up to the rocks and was cozy and very private. Views were beautiful in every direction. Road was a little bumpy coming in. Get there early in the evening to claim a spot because it seems like a popular place to camp (for good reason!)

Moab Meadow

Great free camping ~15min from downtown Moab. Lots of sites all along a meadow/field backing up to the canyon walls. Slow Verizon Service. Would stay again!

Among the crickets

Bumpy but manageable road. Higher clearance vehicle recommended but not necessarily needed. Fire ring available. If you’re looking for a getaway from the main Moab campsites this is a nice place.

Two bars for Verizon.

Breath taking

We stayed here for a night while driving across the country. Our cell service only occasionally worked there. There is no facilities or trash cans. So pack it in and pack it out.

There was only one other camper that we seen but did see several ATVs and stuff on the trails.

There was a fire ring in our site. However, we did start a small fire but quickly doused it due to how dry everything was. The views were breath taking for sure. Would stay here again.

Also, we were only in a jeep cherokee and was able to maneuver but it does get rougher the further in you go.

Good Option on Busy Weekends

All of the campgrounds on UT 128 were full during our late night drive way out that direction; easy enough to find Behind the Rocks, pulled in late, found an open spot, still some people up at early morning hour, sandy dirt spot, rough road into area, woken early by atv users, drove into town for bathroom and breakfast.

Excellent camping near Moab

We were striking out on basically all the campgrounds close to Moab early on a Thursday. Luckily Dyrt led us to this little dispersed camping oasis. Aside from a few motorcycles in the distance, it was nice and quiet! Lots of room for the dog to get out some zoomies after a long car ride.

Despirsed and quiet

To get to the camping i would recommend at least a small suv. I had a ford escape and was fine while going slow. Once you're here it's great especially to descover more if the backcountry with a quad a motorbike or even by car.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I access Behind the Rocks Road for camping in Moab?

Behind the Rocks Road is located about 15 minutes from downtown Moab. The access road is bumpy and can be rough in spots, but is generally passable with care. As you drive in, you'll find multiple camping areas spread along a meadow/field backing up to impressive canyon walls. Many campsites are situated along driveways that branch off the main road, offering varying levels of privacy. It's best to arrive early in the evening to secure a spot, especially during peak seasons, as this free camping area tends to fill up quickly.

Do I need a 4WD vehicle to camp at Behind the Rocks in Moab?

While 4WD isn't strictly necessary for Behind the Rocks, a vehicle with higher clearance is recommended. The road is bumpy and rocky in places, with some washouts possible. Many campers successfully access the area with 2WD vehicles by driving slowly and carefully. Small SUVs like a Ford Escape can handle the terrain well. If you have a standard passenger car, you'll need extra patience navigating the rougher sections, but it's generally doable if you take your time and pick your line carefully.

Is dispersed camping allowed at Behind the Rocks in Moab, Utah?

Yes, Behind the Rocks is specifically designated for dispersed camping. This is free camping with no facilities, so you must pack out all trash and waste. There are no formal amenities like toilets or water sources, though some established sites have fire rings. Remember to bring WAG bags to properly dispose of human waste and protect the desert environment. The area offers plenty of space to spread out, though during busy periods campsites can fill up. This is true primitive camping, so come prepared with everything you need for a self-sufficient stay.

What are the best tent camping spots at Behind the Rocks Moab?

The most coveted tent camping spots at Behind the Rocks are those that back right up to the rock formations, offering both privacy and stunning views. These spots tend to be more sheltered from wind and provide a cozier camping experience. For the best selection, arrive early as the prime spots fill quickly. Some areas offer flat spaces with a few trees for shade. The camping area spreads across a valley with sites that allow you to spread out comfortably. If possible, scout different areas before settling in, as site quality varies throughout the dispersed camping zone.
