Bird watchers and wildlife enthusiasts will find opportunities to spot deer and various bird species at this Ashley National Forest campground. Avintaquin sits about a mile from the main road via a narrow gravel access route that includes washboard sections and a hill climb, requiring careful navigation for larger rigs despite the 48-foot maximum length allowance.
The campground operates two loops with spacious sites and clean vault toilets. Sites cost $5 per night, with senior pass discounts available. Campers often find the area less crowded than other forest destinations, with many sites available even during busy periods. The narrow access road can present challenges for passing other vehicles, so drivers should be prepared to use turnouts when meeting oncoming traffic. This spot works well for tent campers and RV users comfortable navigating forest service roads who want campsites near Ashley National Forest with wildlife viewing opportunities.
