OK But Not Our Favorite

We drove through this campground to check it out, but found it too open and exposed and too full of trucks with ATVs, so we decided to move on to Lower Onion Creek.

A few of the sites are walk up, meaning you park your car and set up camp further away from the loop, which was nice. The sites varied in size and degree of levelness.

There was also a group or horse area to the left.

The road from Hwy 128 was a doable dirt and washboard road.

Vault toilets, minimal cell reception.

$20/night, self pay, no reservations.

Amazing!

We were looking for a campsite away from the business along the river and were So excited to have found this gem. We drove through lower onion creek first (right on the river but other than that, very blah from what we saw, and some lady had her two dogs running around into other peoples sites off leash so that was an immediate No for us). thankfully they were full so we found upper creek instead. These sites were spacious, and the views were unbelievable. Lots of room between sites, we had site 3 which was ideal as it dropped down into some scrubby trees that provided much needed afternoon shade. There’s a horse trail right behind the campground that was perfect for walking our dog along, and the site had plenty of room for her to explore without bothering anyone else.

Great spot!

Spacious sites in a quiet area, a little less busy than right in Moab. We stayed at site 8 and had the perfect tree to hang my hammock in. The wind rocked me all night long it was amazing. The site is maybe a few hundred feet from where you park and just a tiny walk up from the site brings amazing views!

Perfect spot to wake up to

Ended up here after hours of searching for a campsite. We’re car camping so we prefer a pretty view, but it isn’t necessary. This place ended up being our IDEAL spot. Smelly toilet- no showers or running water. But great fire pits and wonderful neighbors. Loved it here. Great for night photography!

Hidden Campsite Close to Everything

We stumbled upon upper onion creek while looking for a last minute campsite during labor day weekend. There were a handful of spots still available even during one of the busiest travel weekends, $20 a night for camping.

VERY basic bathroom facilities, sites were clean and had picnic tables and well marked tent spots. The real treat came at sunset where we had fantastic views; sites were open and far away enough from moab for spectacular star gazing.

10 minutes away from white water rafting site, multiple boat/water ramps, and close enough to town for all Moab has to offer. Looking forward to visiting this site again.

Quiet for a Friday night

Stayed here on a friday night in early August. Arrived pretty late around 8pm. Only 2 other spaces taken, one caravan trailer and a small group of 3 in camping hammocks. Dry vault toilet on site. Not too cramped between spaces which I prefer. Would always prefer dispersed camping but that is sometimes hard to find. This place was a great alternative and was very quiet with beautiful views. Slept with the rain cover off the tent as you can see the Milky Way. It was spectacular. Plenty of swim spots on the Colorado river a short drive away. Would recommend! Giving 4 stars because I would ideally like potable water on site. Was a little pricey at $20 a night for BLM camping.

Remote & Perfect

This was our first time camping here despite going to Moab on a pretty regular basis. We wanted to camp close to Fisher Towers and get away from the camping chaos of Potash Rd on Jeeper Weekend. This was a bit off the beaten path and was about 45 mins from the center of Moab. The location was amazing with stunning views of Fisher Towers, practically no car/traffic noise since it’s a long dirt road leading up to the campground, and provided an authentic desert experience. One pit toilet and no running water/hookups/amenities here, very primitive. One loop with probably 20 spots; surprisingly it filled up by early evening but it was Jeeper Weekend. Definitely recommend if you want to try another Moab campground away from the popular spots!
