Athena Slabs at Green River

Wide open spaces and concrete remnants from a former military installation define the camping experience at Athena Slabs. Located on BLM land just off Interstate 70, this free dispersed site occupies the footprint of an old Air Force base, where approximately 56 concrete slabs measuring 35 feet long and 18 feet wide remain arranged in military formation across the desert landscape.

The gravel access road leads to elevated terrain that provides views across the Green River valley toward distant cliffs. Highway noise reaches the camping area but diminishes with distance from the interstate. Greg L. notes the site offers "excellent cell on Verizon, att and TMobile" with strong 5G coverage reported by multiple visitors. The exposed location means wind can stir up dust, and several campers mention sharp rocks and occasional rebar protruding from the ground requiring careful navigation.

Mountain biking enthusiasts can access the nearby Athena trail system directly from camp. The wide-open terrain accommodates RVs and trailers of various sizes, with one reviewer successfully maneuvering a 30-foot travel trailer to the site. Evening and sunrise views draw extended stays from some visitors, though the complete lack of shade or shelter makes this primarily a fair-weather destination.

No facilities exist on-site—campers must bring water, pack out trash, and plan for primitive conditions. The town of Green River sits less than two miles away for resupply needs. Several campers report encountering deer herds in the area, and the spacious layout typically allows for privacy even when multiple groups are present. For those exploring camping near Green River, this location serves as a convenient overnight stop or base camp for area recreation.

Caution with ground conditions remains essential, as Brad B. warns of "rebar sticking up from the ground here and there, and there was a sharp steel plate near where we parked."

A former military base offering free dispersed camping on concrete slabs near Green River, though recent reports indicate slabs have been demolished. Visitors often highlighted excellent cell coverage and easy highway access, while some noted concerns about debris and road noise.

Easy access with nice views

Easy access to and from the highway. Distant Cliffs provide a nice view. High enough from the road that you don't really hear it. Use caution as there is rebar sticking up from the ground here and there, and there was a sharp steel plate near where we parked.

Wide Open Spaces & Solitude

Stayed here for a week and enjoyed the solitude of this wide open space. The Sunsets and moonrise's are spectactular. Worked on my art while out here. Met Mr. Steve and that was a fun evening. My flying hound-dog loved the freedom. The site is not far from the highway but cannot really hear it up here. Green River is just a short ways away. I recommend it for peace, quiet, amazing sky views and bring a Razor. :-)  Nomad Nikki Mobile Art Studio@NomadNikkiMobileArtStudio on YouTube.  https://www.facebook.com/NikkiYeomansAbstractArt/

Good for an overnight near 70

This site is nice but not great for the views. More so if you need to pull off for a night. Private and perfect for campers, trailers and RVs. Right off 70. Not really any slabs we saw but gravel/rocky.

Pulled a 30 ft travel trailer with a 2003 ford f250 with no problems.

No slabs left. Good for a night.

Just off the highway and the only amenity is good cell service but it's just a rough gravel lot with plenty of parking spaces and like someone mentioned there is still a sketchy camper but he's far away and appears to be living here. Like someone else mentioned there are a lot of sharp rocks and possibly rebar sticking out from when the slabs were moved so I would drive very carefully but it's a great View for the evening although it can get Dusty when the wind picks up since there is no shade or shelter of any kind.

Close to highway and town, good views on hill

Not a bad spot to stay, there was a caravan parked that looked to have someone permanently living there which looked a little sketchy but we didn’t have any trouble, stayed up on top of the hill. Had to give the old van some right foot to get up there but not a bad spot. Good views and was away from anyone else. Probably the best free spot to stay around town. No facilities just open ground looking over the highway and over town

Got slabbed in the face

We got there after dark and we couldn’t find any slabs. They had all been torn up. It’s a dirt field with slab piles and rebar in the dirt. Be careful driving in the field. We still found a nice flat spot to camp.

Easy stop off I-70

About a two minute drive off I-70, so very convenient stop if you’re passing through. Had the place to myself on a Wednesday night, apart from a couple herds of deer. If you’re following directions from the coordinates it’s okay to find in the dark. Can hear the highway. Wouldn’t stay here if I wanted to go “camping”, but it was fine to sleep for the night.

Quick stop right off I70

Easy gravel road after crossing I70. Would be hard to find the slabs at dusk. WIDE open no cover. Lights and noise from freeway. Good cell coverage. Great if just pulling off for a sleep.

Excellent views and nice sites

This picturesque site has great views and spacious sites. This is way more than an overnight sleep, you could stay here 3-4 days for hiking and excellent views at different time of the day. Only caution is road is a bit rough to get to spots but not real bad and well worth It! BTW…AT&T Services was 5G!

Good and close to Hwy but a Lil rough.

It great if you are gonna just spend the night and not really camp. We have dogs with us and there is a lot of junk to watch out for. Some of it from the area's former life and some of it from mis use by users. Not really site numbers but at least 20 slabs to park on. Mtn bike trail in sight of camp kinda of makes up for the mess.

Quick overnight stay

Great spot for a quick overnight stay. Because of the concrete slabs, there are a ton of flat spots to set up whether you are tent or car camping. Easily accessible

Good for quick stop on I-70

Camped right off the slabs to protect the tent, had the whole place completely to ourselves. Can hear the highway, but it’s just like white noise. Easy for short term 1-night!

Athena Slabs at Green River Dispersed

This is an old military air force base, nothing left but all the concrete slabs from the bldgs. Just outside of Green River, excellent cell on Verizon, att and TMobile, some freeway noise depending on wind direction.. Free dispersed, but no water, trash or toilets. The new Athena mt bike trail is close by. Slabs are 35 ft long, 18 ft wide and there are about 56 lined up in military formation.
