Red desert sand defines this BLM dispersed camping area outside Washington, Utah, where the ground is soft enough that gear turns pink by the end of a stay. Sites are spread across an open valley floor with fire rings scattered throughout, and the lack of shade or vegetation means the landscape stays wide open in every direction. No bathrooms, water hookups, or dump stations are available on-site.
Noise is the single most consistent factor reviewers mention. OHV traffic runs throughout the day and, on busy weekends, well past midnight. Shayli L. puts it plainly: "If you're in the area to see Sand Hollow via motorcycle or side-by-side, this is a perfect base camp." Campers who park along the edges of the valley, closer to the surrounding ridgelines, report more distance from the main riding corridor. Highway noise is also a factor for sites near the entrance, though it tends to diminish further in after midnight.
Access is drive-in and free. RVs up to 30 feet have made it in and out without difficulty, though the sandy entrance has surprised some drivers and RWD vehicles should watch for patches of deeper sand. The area sits in a wash, so visiting after rain is not advisable. The Virgin River is accessible nearby for those who want to cool off after a day on the trails, and the Sand Hollow State Park Campground a few miles east provides a developed alternative with amenities.
Cell service is available. Campfires and pets are both permitted, though the volume of OHV traffic makes this a poor fit for small dogs or young children who might wander. Campers looking at places to camp near Washington will find this the closest free option to St. George, making it a practical base for multi-day riding trips rather than a quiet overnight stop.
