Boat ramp access and lakefront camping sites make Sugar Bay Campground a hub for water-based recreation on Lake Barkley. Located at the end of Forest Road 140 within Land Between the Lakes, this dispersed-style campground features cement picnic tables and fire rings scattered throughout wooded terrain above the boat launch. RVs up to 35 feet can access the gravel roads, though several reviewers note the hilly terrain and rough conditions after heavy rain.
Sites spread across two main areas — hillside locations away from the water and lower sites closer to the lake level. The campground includes both a porta-potty near the waterfront and a pit toilet serving the upper sites. Michael M. found "a spacious site with plenty of room to set up our gear," while others mention the ability to anchor watercraft directly next to campsites after launching at the adjacent ramp.
Wildlife encounters feature prominently in visitor accounts, with coyote packs heard calling across the hills at night. The North/South Trail crosses Forest Road 140 about a quarter-mile from the campground, connecting hikers to the trail system that runs the full length of Land Between the Lakes. Biting flies can be problematic during summer months, particularly near the water. A dumpster handles trash disposal, and the campground requires either individual site reservations or an annual dispersed camping permit. For a more developed alternative, Smith Bay Campground offers additional amenities four miles north.
