Within Washington State Department of Natural Resources' resource management area, Dragoon Creek Campground provides free camping just 15-20 minutes from Spokane. The 24 sites spread across two loops accommodate RVs up to 40 feet, with vault toilets, picnic tables, and fire pits at each site. A Washington Discover Pass is required, and stays are limited to three days within a 30-day period.
Camp hosts make regular rounds throughout the day to check permits and enforce stay limits. "The bathrooms are incredibly clean," notes Henry H., with reviewers consistently praising the maintenance of facilities. Sites vary from sunny and open to shaded under mature trees, with sites 19 and 20 receiving the most sun exposure. Most sites offer good spacing and privacy despite the campground's proximity to neighboring properties.
Dragoon Creek runs through the campground, though access to the water isn't easy from all sites. The shallow creek works for wading and serves as a swimming hole during warmer months, but it's not suitable for deeper water activities. Road noise from nearby traffic is audible throughout the grounds. Cell service reaches 2-3 bars for AT&T users, allowing for remote work capabilities.
The campground fills quickly by Friday afternoon during peak season, while weekday visits offer more solitude. Gates close at 10 PM, preventing late-night arrivals. Campers must pack out all trash, as no collection service operates on-site. "Surrounded by private property, so no hiking," explains Kebby J., making this primarily a base camp rather than a recreation destination.
Dragoon Creek works well for campers wanting convenient access to Spokane amenities while maintaining a wooded setting, particularly those seeking an affordable overnight stop or short getaway from urban areas.
