It took 20 years of development, including weathering a flood and a World War, but in 1956 the community of Huntsville, Texas, finally got their own state park. Located just 10 miles south of town, in the Sam Houston National Forest, this 2,000-acre park of pine and hardwood forest is situated around man-made Lake Raven. Today, locals and visitors alike flock to Huntsville State Park for its hiking trails, water recreation and prolific wildlife. With so many outdoor activities to choose from, a good first stop is the park’s Nature Center. Here you can get information about the local flora and fauna, including the more than 250 species of birds, plus a variety of mammals and alligators, that make the park their home. Campers at Huntsville State Park have access to 160 tent and RV campsites in three camp areas near the shore of Lake Raven: Prairie Branch, Raven Hill and Coloneh. Full- and partial-hookup RV sites are available, and can accommodate vehicles/trailers up to 60 feet. All sites are equipped with picnic tables, grills, and lantern posts, and drinking water faucets are shared between sites; some sites are ADA accessible. Each camp area provides flush restrooms, showers, playgrounds, picnic areas near the lake, fishing piers, and boat launches. There is a dump station located in the Raven Hill camp area. The park also has two camping cabins for rent. Campsite rates range from $15–$25/night, plus park entrance fee; cabins are $60/night, plus entrance fee. When you’re ready to play on the water, head down to the lakeshore where you can take a dip in the designated swim area, rent a canoe or kayak (or put in your own) for paddling around the lake, or cast a line for crappie, perch and largemouth bass. A shop near the Prairie Branch day-use area has groceries, ice, fishing supplies and beverages. If you’re up for some roaming or wildlife watching, pick up a trail map and birding guide and go explore more than 20 miles of multiuse paths and nature walks. From the park’s bird blind, you can scan for a variety of songbirds and waterfowl. The park also offers ranger-led nature programs, and there are Junior Ranger activities for the kids.

    Wonderful park and scenery

Have stayed at this park many times and never disappointed. Park is always clean and has all the amenities. Won't find a more friendly and professional staff- second to none. Woods with trails allow for walking, with or without the dogs. You won't be disappointed staying here- highly recommend.

    Diamond in the Rough

The new owners are going all out to make this a family friendly RV park/campground/marina. Only having it for 14 months, you can see the improvements made. There is a store on site for all your needs, that includes wine from the owners own winery. There a a grill also on sight. The campground is gravel pad sites that are mostly level (try site3). They have cabins if you don’t have a RV. Very friendly and eager to make your stay wonderful.

Our visit was a week before Christmas and the decorations were up and beautiful. Give them a try, as we give them a recommendation.

    Lake Bryan Campground

    90% Terrible

Site #9 was extremely unlevel, narrow, and not for big rigs. Only 30 amp service and the 110 did not work.  The campsite host (?) said to load up and move to another site. He was very unfriendly, sarcastic, and just plain sad. This is a party place at night, not suitable for small children or sensitive folks at night. The shade was wonderful! It was also wonderful that they came around every morning to empty trash cans and replace them with new liners.

    Hidden gem

Beautiful small state park. We usually tent camp but this time we decided staying at a cabin. Nice, beautiful and modern cabins. Love the enclosed porch and open porch as well. The cabin was spacious enough for our family of 6. The new family restroom close to the cabins was great, nice and clean. I will be back.

    Beautiful and well-maintained campsite

Beautiful and well-maintained campsite. We have been to this RV Resort a few times and have NEVER been disappointed. They literally have thought of everything from daily trash pick-up to refilling propane tanks. All of the staff are absolutely wonderful and very friendly(professional). Every time we are in the area, we will be booking with Hidden Creek RV Resort. Highly recommended!!

    Great locations, poorly run

The dorm was a great place to stay when I visited my son at university. The reservation number is for a different park with the same name.  Everything looks neat and in its place. Location is quite basic.

    Cute little state park

My wife and I rented a cabin for Christmas. It was clean and new. Wonderful bathrooms nearby. We hiked the trails and went and checked out the little lake.

The park staff where super friendly. We had a great stay.

I would give it 5 stars, but the park does not have RV sites. Cabins and primitive camping only

Excellent location to stay while visiting my daughter at school. Because of the construction and the way the roads work, it is difficult to get around from there cuphead. The site is neat and tidy.

    Great Place to Camp!

We LOVED our stay at Salmon Lake! We have been here a few times. The staff is amazing, the prices are great and include full hookups and the campground is one of the most unique places we’ve ever stayed. There is an old west town, cabins, a ton of space to explore, some neat photo ops and a great swimming hole with a sand bottom. We were told that we were welcome to spread out and take up 2 spaces. The place was built in the 80’s for festivals so the new owners are working on a lot of upgrades. The new bathhouse is really nice. We love that we can camp in the woods or under the stars- there are a lot of options. We were also really happy when it rained and due to the sandy soil, the water drained quickly and we didn’t have to deal with mud holes that evening. If you’re into old school camping- this is your place!!

    Salmon Lake Park & Resort

    Underrated & unique family fun!

We have camped at Salmon Lake many times. It is a favorite of the kiddos. The original owner was a house mover, so there are all kinds of old "western town" type setups..old jail, old barber shop, tons of old cars etc. It is fun just to walk around and look at them all. On some visits there is a train ride that runs, but not always. Some of the buildings are cabin rentals. We have never rented a cabin, only done RV camping, but the cabins look so neat!!

There is a playground by the lake and The lake is gorgeous and the kids like to swim in it. It has a giant slide for them and a swimming dock in the middle. It is like a step back in time to the simpler days, very no frills camping. We have brought dirt bikes and small atv before. Owners are ok if you bring them, just be respectful and don't tear anything up. The owners are great hosts and super nice.

All the spots are different (there are 100s of spots...they don't reserve spots. you just get there and then go pick one.)  There is a wooded section of sites behind the lake, but have never camped in that area. We usually pick a spot in the field near the big fire pit or tree. Most sites do not have fire pits or tables, but we usually find one near a fire pit or table with no problems. Be sure to check the sites before you unhook...some have full hookups, some have sketchy looking electric, but we just check everything before unhooking and use a surge protector.  We always look for full hookup sites and have never had a problem finding one way away from other campers. 10/10 one of our favorite campsites and a seriously underrated spot. We always say it feels like going back to a summer camp in the 70s-80s (in the best kind of way!!)
