Three modern, well-maintained cabins provide comfortable lodging for families traveling with dogs. The park maintains primitive tent camping areas that also permit pets on leash throughout the grounds. Yellow Rose RV Park and Hidden Creek RV Resort both accommodate pets in their cabin rentals and camping sites, with Hidden Creek featuring 141 sites across their property. Limestone Lake Park provides free primitive camping with pets allowed, though reviewers note there are no fire rings permitted in this area. Picnic tables and shelters are available at most designated sites with toilets provided at select locations. The park's spacious layout allows campers to find secluded spots even during busy periods.

Huntsville State Park Campground and Fort Parker State Park both maintain pet-friendly sites with electric hookups, water connections, and sewer facilities for RVs, while still welcoming tent campers with pets. Trails around these parks permit leashed dogs, though swimming areas often have restrictions. The pet-friendly camping options near Leona generally require pets to remain on leash at all times when outside vehicles or camping units. Most parks enforce standard pet policies including waste cleanup, vaccination requirements, and quiet hour compliance. Families camping with children and pets particularly enjoy Fort Boggy's modern cabin facilities with their enclosed porches and nearby family restroom facilities. The sulphuric water at some campgrounds like Salmon Lake Park is worth noting when planning for pet hydration needs, with many experienced campers bringing bottled water for themselves and their animals.

      Huntsville State Park Campground

Good Weekend Getaway Close to Houston

I like Huntsville State Park campground for a long weekend getaway.  It is about an hour north of Houston not far off Interstate 45, so very easily accessible.  They have a large campground section which is only campsites, and also another section on the other side of a cove that is more of a recreational section which has a swimming beach, cabins, screened shelters, etc.  This state park gets very crowded in the summertime, with campers as well as lots of day use folks enjoying the water.  It is hard to get a campsite reservation, so plan ahead!

The sites are spacious as in most Texas state parks, and there are many shaded sites.  The waterfront sites are tiered.  The upper tier is where you park your rig.  Then there is a retaining wall and steps to walk down to the lower tier where the picnic table, fire ring, lantern post, etc.. are located.  We really didn't ever go down to the lower part of our site because it was inconvenient.  It was a good place to walk the dogs though.  The campground does slope slightly and the sites are not all real level, so be sure to bring your "legos" if you don't have a leveling system on your rig.  The grounds did not seem to be as well maintained as some other state parks I've been to.  We couldn't use the picnic table because it was surrounded by tall weeds and had a lot of spider webs under it.  Bath house was not well maintained and kind of dingy.  It was also not ventilated well and felt like a sauna as it was so humid in July.

There is a nice fishing pier and several places to fish off the bank.  A ranger told me there are alligators in the lake, so be careful.

      Huntsville State Park Campground

A Little Bit of Pine Forest Heaven

Located on the west edge of the east Texas piney woods, this state park features excellent RV and tent camping facilities, and a beautiful network of heavily forested trails. The lake offers canoeing, kayaking, swimming and fishing, and affords visitors an occasional glimpse of alligators. We love this place.

      Fort Parker State Park Campground

      Fisherman Paradise....Not for Everyone

The front guardhouse/entrance is extra campy. Low light and decorated with 69 yo 74lb catch pictures. This is by far the most fisherman geared Texas State Park we have been to and it's our 12th!

The playground is nicer than expected. The tr ails are well-marked.

A quirk of this park are the neighbors. You drive by 8 plus mailboxes while inside the State Park. An abandoned home half collapsed is seen from the roadway. So that's unique.

Beautiful and generally well kept. It's an older style but they have a newer playground area next to the old one.

      For a family I give this a 2. For Fisherman a 5. For everyone else a 3.

Fairfield Lake State Park - PERMANENTLY CLOSED

      Lost on the trails

Ok they need a better map for these trails. I got a bit turned around and ended up off trailing it in the right direction to go back. The lake had some nice inlets to paddle. The campground was nice, but there were some erosion issues due to past flooding.

Fairfield Lake State Park - PERMANENTLY CLOSED

      Fairfield Lake: spring favorite

Fairfield offers a great weekend getaway location! The park boasts a large selection of shaded camp spots (i.e. lots of space for hammocks!) that offer privacy from one another. Visited on a holiday weekend, and it didn't feel crowded at all. Walk down to the lake or explore several miles of walking trails. Perfect night out! As a bonus, visit the Cooper Farms store right across the highway (exit 198) for the best fresh peaches and peach ice cream you've ever tasted!

      Limestone Lake Park

      Perfect Spot by the Lake

I'm surprised no one else has reviewed this place yet, it is awesome! Other than the occasional local on their boats making noise, this place was pretty serene. The drive to the location is very rural once you exit 45. Many nice folks in the community here were waving at me when I drove by.

I decided to stay here because it was free and I did not feel like driving further to Dallas. There are porta potties available stocked with toilet paper. There are 3 or 4 small roads to take once you get inside, which lead you towards the lake. You can get an RV inside a few of the spots without obscuring entry for other vehicles. There is one large patio for events and has seating for about 25 people.

There are fish in the lake, one foot long dead floating bass was right in front of me. Plenty of smaller fish dancing on the water. There are areas to bbq as well. A couple docks you can walk off that are small and can cast a fishing rod.

The place was decently busy for a hidden gem, though I was the only person on my side of the area. I was there on a Saturday so perhaps during the week it is more quiet.

This was one of my favorite places I've stayed at in Texas so far (haven't been to a lot of locations so far in the state) and would definitely return again with better preparation and additional family members and friends.

      Teserra RV Park

      Affordable but a bit cramped

All inclusive pricing is great, very close to town and Texas A&M. Very tight spots and close to your neighbors

      The Ranch at Walton Springs

      Quiet Park

The park is located 6 miles outside and south of Palestine. It’s almost halfway on Co Rd 156 between FM 2419 and US 287. Once in the park, the roads are a little rough and there is a mix between Mobile Homes and RVs. Our visit has been quiet and peaceful outside of a few barks from the dogs. The owners seem to be pleasant.

    Guide to Leona

Camping opportunities near Leona, Texas feature diverse landscapes within the East Texas Post Oak Savannah region, an ecological transition zone between pine forests and blackland prairies. Winter temperatures typically range from 40-60°F while summers reach 90-100°F with high humidity. The area's clay soil can create challenging conditions during rain events, particularly at primitive sites where drainage issues are common.

    What to do

Kayaking and fishing access: Fort Parker State Park Campground provides multiple water activities with boat rentals and lake access directly from campsites. Amy J. notes, "We have a big group that camps every spring and fall. This was one of my favorites. The campsites are right on the water. We rented a few screened shelters and brought kayaks."

Swimming in designated areas: Huntsville State Park Campground features a dedicated swim area separate from fishing zones. According to Joe S., "excellent facilities, great mountain bike trails, fairly clean bathrooms, good fishing, nice swimming hole."

Trail exploration: Park trails accommodate various experience levels with well-marked paths. Teresa W. from Huntsville State Park shares, "Wonderful trails. Clear and well marked. Primitive (water only) tent sites on lakeshore side leave the camper hunting flat surfaces while avoiding runoff pathways."

Lakeside relaxation: Limestone Lake Park offers secluded spots along the water with minimal facilities but maximum tranquility. Brian explains, "I had a lakeside spot and had the place all to myself on a weekday. This place seems pretty remote, so mostly local folks would be my guess."

    What campers like

Privacy between sites: Fort Boggy State Park Campground receives high marks for site spacing and design. According to Lonnie B., "I stopped in to use the showers, not realizing they were outdoor showers. The water was turned off, but the park looks to be very well taken care of."

Well-maintained facilities: Yellow Rose RV Park earns praise for cleanliness and staff assistance. Ryan N. comments, "VERY well maintained. Staff was all super friendly and helped with all questions. A huge plus was seeing the million stars under the Texas sky!"

Free camping options: Limestone Lake Park provides no-cost camping with basic amenities near water. Greg C. reports, "As another mentioned the pin is off a bit. Basically turn right instead of left at the end. Had a nice spot overlooking the lake. Not crowded at the time I was there. Be prepared for a lot of bugs."

Concrete tables at sites: Some campgrounds feature permanent picnic facilities resistant to weather conditions. Steven B. from Huntsville notes, "The site has an older concrete picnic table and unfortunately is missing one of the benches."

    What you should know

Fire restrictions: Limestone Lake Park prohibits campfires despite being a free camping area. Erik I. explains, "This park is not as great as other reviews lead you to believe. I'll break it down: 1. They don't allow campfires. As in, none. There are no fire rings. That right there takes it off the list for me."

Wildlife encounters: Fort Parker State Park and surrounding areas have active wildlife. Amy H. from Huntsville cautions, "Check yourself for ticks after hiking the trails though. Its a thick forest."

Water conditions: Some parks in the region have water quality issues. Kyndall W. from Huntsville shares, "The bathroom had a lot of spiders but I'd expect that. The showers drained super slow but you just have to take a quick one."

Seasonal crowding: Local parks experience varying usage patterns throughout the year. Brian from Limestone Lake Park notes, "I had a lakeside spot and had the place all to myself on a weekday. This place seems pretty remote, so mostly local folks would be my guess."

    Tips for camping with families

Multiple kid-friendly activities: Crockett Family Resort features numerous recreation options in one location. Lisa P. shares, "Super fun place to go for the weekend with lots of kids activities. (mini golf, playground, pool, lake, paddle boat rentals etc). Have cafe with pizza/snacks/drinks."

Dog friendly campgrounds near Leona: Most area parks welcome pets with standard leash requirements. Boundless W. from Fort Boggy reports, "My wife and I rented a cabin for Christmas. It was clean and new. Wonderful bathrooms nearby. We hiked the trails and went and checked out the little lake."

Cabin accommodations: Several parks offer cabin rentals as alternatives to tent camping for families seeking more comfort. Perla P. explains Fort Boggy's options, "Beautiful small state park. We usually tent camp but this time we decided staying at a cabin. Nice, beautiful and modern cabins. Love the enclosed porch and open porch as well."

Playground equipment: Some parks feature updated play structures. Amie M. notes about Fort Parker, "The playground is nicer than expected. The trails are well-marked."

    Tips from RVers

Site positioning: Hidden Creek RV Resort receives praise for thoughtful site layout. Tracie U. says, "Beautiful and well-maintained campsite. We have been to this RV Resort a few times and have NEVER been disappointed. They literally have thought of everything from daily trash pick-up to refilling propane tanks."

Leveling needs: Be prepared for uneven terrain at several area campgrounds. Steven B. advises about Huntsville, "The site is fairly level side-to-side with 2.75 inches low difference. The site is sloped front-to-back, but even with a long rig you should be fine."

Pet-friendly facilities: Many dog friendly RV parks near Leona accommodate travelers with pets. Jeff B. from Karstens RV Resort simply states, "What a great RV Park. Clean, great rates. Very good wifi included."

Waterfront premium sites: Lakeside spots are most desirable and book quickly.
