Badlands Boondocking Area

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Wildlife viewing starts before you even set up camp. Visitors have spotted bison herds moving through this dispersed camping area within Buffalo Gap National Grassland, and the open sightlines toward the eroded rock formations of the Badlands make the surrounding landscape a constant presence from any site.

The setup here is more structured than typical dispersed camping. Numbered, signed sites are spaced to provide separation between campers, and the area accommodates rigs up to 40 feet on the southern loop, though most sites are not level. Tim R. advises driving the full area before committing to a site: "We wished we had driven around first and picked the best site instead of stopping early." A few designated tent-only sites are also marked. The contrast between the rugged rock formations to one side and the wide grasslands to the other gives each site a distinct character depending on which direction it faces.

Wind is the one condition every reviewer mentions. It can shift quickly from manageable to disruptive, particularly for rooftop tent setups. Check forecasts before arrival. Cell coverage is a practical plus: multiple reviewers confirm workable signal from T-Mobile and Verizon, and satellite also functions well. There are no other amenities on site, so arrive with water, food, and everything else you need.

Access is straightforward from I-90. Take the Wall exit south and watch for two radio towers marking the turn into the camping area. The Badlands Boondocking and Buffalo Gap Dispersed Camping areas sit nearby for overflow or alternative spots. Camping is free with a 14-day limit. Kai Z. sums it up simply: "Waking up in the morning to the incredible views is absolutely worth it." Come with low-maintenance gear, flexibility on leveling, and a windbreak if you have one.

Campers regularly cited the beautiful views and peaceful boondocking experience near Badlands National Park. Free 14-day camping with good cell service and designated sites, though wind and inconsiderate campers occasionally impact the stay.

Badlands Boondocking

Great location, easy in, turn room, easy out. Camp spots are well spaced apart and the views, walks, sunrises, sunsets, the cows and beautiful winds.
Please respect the Lands, carry in, carry out, and it means cig-butts.

Such a great spot

This spot was stunning. There were other campers, but everyone was quiet and at good spacing in early October. Bring bug spray there were a lot of mosquitos once the sun started to go down, they were smaller than I was used to, so I didn't realize what they were until I was bit all over.

Otherworldly Views

This is dispersed camping but with designated numbered sites. We stayed in site 1 with those beautiful otherworldly badlands views right out our door. There are a few sites that are designated tent only spots and the others are for any type of camping. The wind is no joke in this area. Check the weather before you go.

Amazing Views and a Unique Camping Experience

Staying here is a really special experience. Being able to camp here for free feels like a real privilege. Waking up in the morning to the incredible views is absolutely worth it. Yes, it can get quite windy, but in our experience it was still very manageable. There are designated campsites, and even though we arrived fairly late, we were still able to get an excellent spot. We were also pleasantly surprised that the cell service was pretty decent. If you have the opportunity to stay here, we would definitely recommend it. The views alone make it worth the visit.

Windy

Rolled in Friday morning with plenty of spots still open. Absolute chaos once the wind kicked up though — definitely not for faint-of-heart rooftop tent campers.

Gorgeous free dispersed camping!

Couldn't ask for a better view! Well maintained spots, most are not level. There are quite a few spots to choose from. We stayed on the southern side near the loop. Our rig is 33' and we had tons of space, could easily fit a 40' rig.

Awesome views of the Badlands and Buffalo Gap Grasslands

Wall Dispersed Camping near Badlands National Park is a great spot for anyone looking to boondock with awesome views and a peaceful atmosphere. The location offers a unique contrast— rugged rock formations on one side and the wide-open grasslands of the Buffalo Gap National Grasslands on the other.

To get there, take the Wall Exit off I-90 and head south. Watch for the two radio towers— that's where you'll turn into the camping area. Once you turn in, don't be afraid to explore north(left) to look for spots. We wished we had driven around first and picked the best site instead of stopping early— there were definitely some better spots farther down. Campsites are marked with signs to help keep space between campers, which is a nice touch for privacy. T-Mobile service worked well during our stay. It can get very windy, so come prepared— and don’t be surprised if you’re sharing the area with a herd of cattle. It’s all part of the experience. A great free camping option with incredible scenery.
