Muddy Run Recreation Park

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Managed by PECO, Muddy Run Recreation Park in Holtwood, Pennsylvania centers on a 100-acre reservoir that shapes nearly every activity available to campers. The campground runs from late March through October and holds 189 sites in total, with 148 wired for electric and water hookups. No sewer connections are available on-site, though two dump stations serve the loop. Sites include paved parking pads, picnic tables, charcoal grills, and fire rings. Some sites are designated monthly or seasonal rentals only.

The reservoir is the main draw. Kayaks, canoes, paddle boats, and rowboats with electric motors are available to rent, and fishing is permitted on the lake. A free splash pad runs daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. through early September, and several playgrounds are scattered across the grounds. A snack bar with a screened-in porch overlooking the water serves food from breakfast through dinner. Disc golf rounds out the activity list. Reviewers note the tent-only sites are not heavily shaded and can feel cramped compared to the more wooded primitive group areas, which may suit campers looking for more separation.

Laure D. counted 38 tent-only sites and 3 primitive group sites alongside the hookup loops. Rates run $35 per night or $185 per week. Bathhouses and laundry facilities are on-site, and WiFi is available. Reservations are accepted and pets are allowed. Campers wanting a different setup nearby can look at Susquehannock State Park Campground to the south, or browse campgrounds around Holtwood for additional options in the area.

Many campers appreciated the extensive family amenities including boat rentals, splash pad, and playgrounds around a 100-acre lake. Guests commonly noted reasonable pricing and clean facilities. Tent campers may find sites cramped compared to RV areas.

Nice campground!

This campground is really nice. It’s quaint, not overly swamped with an itinerary for kids, but just enough to keep them busy. It’s very relaxing!

Fun amenities for families; utilitarian campground

First the positives:

  • The free splash pad is perfect for younger kids and felt great on a hot summer day.
  • Boat rentals were cheap and perfectly adequate. The area of the reservoir where you can travel is limited, but fun to cruise around in an hour or so.
  • There are quite a few playgrounds in the area.
  • I did not get to try the disc golf course, but a few holes look particularly fun.
  • Snack Bar was great; decent food and the screened-in porch overlooking the water is awesome. And can't beat the convenience.
  • Bathrooms were reasonably clean and did the job.

My one primary gripe about the campground is the layout of the tent sites, which are not particularly well shaded, were a bit cramped, and felt like an afterthought to the numerous RV sites. There were some primitive sites that looked more wooded, but less organized. I might try those next time.

Older but great day use area

We visited the day use area but drove through the campground for future reference. The campground offers a lot of sites (189 sites). 148 sites have electric and water. Some sites are monthly rental only. They also offer seasonal sites. There are 38 tent only sites as well. There are 3 primitive group sites. There are paved parking pads, picnic tables, charcoal grills, and of course a fire ring in each. No sewer hookups but we saw 2 dump stations. There are laundry facilities and bathhouses. $35 a night or $185 a week. Use of the day use area included is awesome. Plenty of playgrounds, disc golf, boat rentals, an observatory (closed due to covid for now), snack bar that is open 8-5 or 6 daily for breakfast, lunch, dinner or snacks, and a splash pad (free!) for water fun open 10-7 daily but shuts down Sept 6. All this is all nestled around a 100 acre lake. You can fish, or rent boats (kayak, paddle boats, canoes, or rowboats with electric motors) on the lake. Tons of fun here!

Fun day area!

$20 to rent a kayak for 1 1/2 hour! Had a great time taking my son for a spin around the lake. The snack shop had burgers and shakes that were very reasonably priced!
