French Creek State Park Campground offers equestrian trails for riders seeking day-use experiences near Bristol, Pennsylvania. The park maintains 35 miles of hiking trails, some of which allow horseback riding on designated equestrian routes. Loop C is the only pet-friendly camping area in the park, making it suitable for campers traveling with both horses and dogs. The campground features 200 individual sites across four loops with a mix of primitive, electric, and full-hookup options for various camping styles.
Located approximately 15 miles southeast of Reading, French Creek provides access to multiple trail systems suitable for riders of all experience levels. The park's horseback riding trails wind through the largest tract of forest between New York City and Washington DC, offering scenic woodland views and abundant wildlife viewing opportunities. Riders should wear blaze orange during fall hunting seasons as hunting is permitted in most areas of the park. Mountainview Campground, situated in the nearby New Jersey mountains, also accommodates horses with open fields and hunting trails accessible from the campsites. The campground's remote location creates a quiet environment where campers frequently encounter wildlife including deer, foxes, and various bird species.
"Campsite decent size, but some don't have clear boundaries to neighbors, and sometimes not optimally configured (e.g., the site next door's fire pit was placed on the edge of its site/right next to my"

"We were looking for someplace close to the city but away from the hustle and bustle of our city life, this was the perfect little steal-away; relatively close by, great car camping spots, nice easy hikes"

"We were kindly escorted to our site (a nice refreshing change from having to wander around to find the sites ourselves), which was the one farthest away from the entrance."
"Close by to a couple of nice state parks. Cute sheep and goats that wander about during the day! Sweet little spot, we'll definitely be back!"
"Lots of walking paths surround the park & you are also close to Belmar, Point Pleasant, Manasquan (all fun shore towns)."
"Nice state park with trails nearby."
"Park employees and park police drive around through the day. Some big groups of campers got a little rowdy at night. The bathrooms were absolutely disgusting."
"The actual site was nice and was close to the bathrooms. There was plenty of shade as the sun moved throughout the day."

Restrooms are filthy with mold and mildew.
Water puddled on the restroom floor.really gross.
Cabin was mostly clean. The windows were full of dirt and bugs on the tracks.mattresses were terrible. The fireplace was nice. Kitchen was clean.
Can t wait to move on to a cleaner park.
Beautiful campground but made the mistake of going on a holiday weekend, the campgrounds next to us were screaming and blasting music all day and throughout the night so we ended up leaving early. A beautiful campground when there aren’t noisy capers ruining it.
Stayed three nights in a tent and enjoyed it very much. Sites have electrical hookups, shared water connections, large picnic table, and fire ring with adjustable grate. Electrical and water are at the outer edge of each site so you might want an extension cord and/or hose. Bathrooms are clean; showers have separate stalls but they’re clustered together (not the most private). There are hiking and biking trails, a lake, and archery park. Staff are friendly. Office is open through 9pm, and firewood, ice, and bait for fishing are available. Site C3 is in an okay spot; it’s close to the bathroom and laundry room, but also right next to the playground. We were able to visit the beach; easy 25 minute drive to Asbury Park.
Beautiful park and very peaceful. Rangers are super friendly. This is exactly what camping should be.
We spent a weekend at French Creek State Park as our home base for the Chester County Balloon Festival. We stayed for 2 nights at a full-hookup paved site, which ran us $55.25 per night.
WHAT I LIKED:
Peace& Quiet: The state park itself was lovely, serene, and felt nice and spacious.
Prime Location: At just 30 minutes away from the balloon festival, this is the closest campground.
WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE SO MUCH:
The"Leveling" Challenge: We were at site#C-241, which had a pretty significant slope. It took a few boards under the rear wheels and fully extended jacks just to get us anywhere near level.
Tight Fit for Big Rigs: Even though there was plenty of open space behind our site, the actual driveway pad was too short to comfortably fit our motorhome and Jeep together. Compared to other state parks we’ve visited, the interior roads and layouts felt a bit on the tight side.
WOULD WE COME BACK?
The camp site was amazing. Everything is neat and clean and really beautiful place so quiet.
Nice site. Neighbor not to close. Bring extra water hose. The connection is not very close.
This is our 3rd time at this park, it is one of our favorites. Well maintained, very quiet. We stay in Loop A (full hookup) pet friendly. Sites are spacious, generally large but they are all back-in sites.
Horseback riding trails and camping options near Bristol, Pennsylvania offer access to diverse terrain across southeastern Pennsylvania and neighboring New Jersey. The region features a mix of wooded campgrounds and open field sites where riders can access both state park trail systems and hunting lands. Winter temperatures typically range from 20-40°F, while summer months average 70-85°F with moderate humidity.
Fishing opportunities: Spruce Run Recreation Area provides access to reservoir fishing with multiple species. "There are several warm water fish in the lakes including northern pike, chain pickerel, bass, walleye, muskellunge and several types of panfish. Ice fishing is also allowed at both lakes and the ice thickness is monitored."
Stargazing sessions: Mountainview Campground offers clear night skies away from city light pollution. "Very clean and quite. Bath stalls and showers are basic but clean. Great spot for stargazing. Owners are very nice," notes Scott A.
Wildlife viewing: The remote location of many campgrounds provides excellent opportunities to observe native species. "We couldn't have picked a better time of the year too, the fall leaves were so vibrant. When we got to the campsite and checked in, there was a chicken right outside the camp office, which my dog seemed to appreciate most!"
Private wooded sites: Turkey Swamp Park offers secluded camping areas. "Sites are in the woods and widely spaced apart to give you privacy and the feeling of being out in the Forrest. Sites are all level, very generous in size, and reasonably spaced apart for privacy," mentions Katheryn N.
Fall color viewing: The heavily wooded areas provide spectacular autumn displays. "Quite site with pretty foliage," shares Esther L. about Brendan Byrne State Forest, making it a seasonal favorite for equestrian campers.
Clean facilities: Many campers appreciate the well-maintained amenities. "All sites have a paved level area which made set up a breeze. Sites were not on top of each other. Bathrooms were very nice and clean with large showers. Nice area to wash dishes. Very nice playground area and clean."
Equestrian access policies: Different campgrounds have varying rules for horses. At French Creek State Park Campground, while some trails allow horseback riding, specific policies apply. "Oh and don't forget about the horseback riding! Please bring your own horse - no rentals available," notes one reviewer.
Tick awareness: Several campgrounds report active tick populations during warmer months. "By the 2nd day I had 3 ticks on me. My dog had one and by the end my husband had 2. That was so crazy because we were just sitting by our camper," warns a visitor to Turkey Swamp Park.
Bathroom conditions: Facility quality varies widely between campgrounds. "I don't know if they have anyone who goes around to clean the bath houses but it certainly was in need of cleaning," reports one camper, while another notes, "Showers were a little spidery but kind of expected at a campground."
Playground access: Look for campgrounds with dedicated play areas. "There are playgrounds both in the campground and by the office," mentions one camper, while another notes that Allaire State Park has "Centralized playground for the kids with bathrooms and showers next door."
Water activities: Several campgrounds offer kid-friendly water recreation. "We went camping with our 2- and 3-year-old kids. We were worried about bugs, but we didn't even use mosquito repellent and didn't get a single bite! The campground was super clean too. It was perfect!"
Diverse terrain: Sites offer varying levels of privacy and space. "We loved our stay at this park, and plan to return. We tented in loop D…the only bad part was that it was kind of hard to find a level and rock-free spot large enough for our tent, but we managed!"
Site leveling considerations: Pay attention to the terrain when selecting sites. "If bringing your RV, the safest bet is to reserve a spot with no shade as the other spots often times have very low hanging tree limbs," advises Douglas P.
Water hookup planning: Not all sites offer convenient connections. "They don't mostly, have hookups it's a trade off because the sites on the water are just so nice. We luckily have some solar so we can go for awhile without running the generator. We fill our fresh water tank for and bring drinking water."
Seasonal considerations: Weather impacts RV camping significantly in this region. "My campsite was 34W, right next the reservoir. Nice location however the website said it was full shade. The picnic table was in shade. The spot for the RV was full sun," reports Frank J., highlighting the importance of checking site descriptions carefully.
