Willamette National Forest runs the Trout Creek Campground along the South Santiam River, keeping it open from early May through September 30 each year. Sites are separated by dense vegetation, giving most of them a degree of privacy that's relatively uncommon in campgrounds this accessible. Reservations are required; signs throughout the campground make clear this is not first-come, first-served, and booking through recreation.gov before arrival is the only reliable way to secure a spot.
Water is the central draw here, though access to the river varies by site. Sites 13 and 15 draw consistent attention for their proximity to a waterfall that flows directly across from them, running well into May and June. Some riverfront sites look out onto dense forest rather than open water, and at least one reviewer noted they "couldn't actually access the water" despite having a riverside site. Anglers will find the Santiam River fishable, and the Walton Ranch Interpretive Trail is within reach for day hiking. No cell service on Verizon has been reported, so plan accordingly.
Vault toilets at the campground have been noted as clean, and drinking water is available on-site. RVs up to 32 feet can be accommodated. Early June visits tend to bring rain, slugs, and muddy sites, so late May or July through August may offer more stable conditions. Yukwah Campground sits roughly half a mile east for campers who want a nearby alternative, and those traveling with dogs can find pet-friendly campgrounds around Willamette National Forest if Trout Creek fills up.
