Great spot!

Great spot to camp! Went there on 4th of July weekend and had no trouble finding a spot to camp along the lake. The ranger told us about this back road that goes all the way around the lake and it will take you to the beach and you can park there and camp for free!! The road is a little rough so a 4whd is recommended

Amazing Campsite

There's a campground where there's bathroom and a fee to reserve your site. But everywhere else around the lake is free to camp just need to find a spot to camp. No bathroom so grab a shovel lol

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I find dispersed camping near Clear Lake in Oregon?

Dispersed camping is available all around Clear Lake outside the main campground area. There's a back road that circles the entire lake with multiple spots where you can camp for free. These areas don't have bathrooms or formal facilities, so you'll need to be prepared for primitive camping and follow Leave No Trace principles. The beach area is particularly popular for dispersed camping, and you can typically drive right up and park near your chosen spot. While the designated campground charges a fee and provides bathrooms, the dispersed areas offer a more rustic experience with direct lake access.

Is Clear Lake Campground part of Mount Hood National Forest?

Yes, Clear Lake Campground is part of Mount Hood National Forest. The campground is managed by the U.S. Forest Service as part of this national forest system. This means it follows federal regulations regarding camping seasons, fee collection, and reservation processes. Rangers from Mount Hood National Forest patrol the area and can provide assistance to campers when needed.

What activities can I do while camping at Clear Lake in Oregon?

Clear Lake offers excellent swimming and beach activities during warm months. The lake is perfect for paddling sports like kayaking and canoeing, with calm waters and scenic views. Fishing is popular, with opportunities to catch various trout species. Hiking trails surround the area, providing access to Mount Hood's beautiful forest terrain. Wildlife viewing is common, especially in early mornings and evenings. Photography enthusiasts will find plenty of stunning landscape shots featuring the lake with mountain backdrops. Stargazing is exceptional on clear nights due to minimal light pollution. During winter, nearby areas offer snowshoeing and cross-country skiing opportunities.

How do I get to Clear Lake Campground from Government Camp?

From Government Camp, take US-26 E toward Madras/Bend. Continue for approximately 18-20 miles, then watch for signs to Clear Lake Campground. The turn-off from the highway leads to the campground entrance. The route is generally well-marked, though some portions of the access road may be rough depending on recent maintenance. The drive typically takes about 30-40 minutes. For the most current directions, check with Mount Hood National Forest before your trip.
