Reservations open the door here, but showing up prepared makes the difference. Robert H. Treman State Park Campground runs from late April through mid-November, with nightly rates ranging from $24 to $128 depending on site type. The campground divides into two loops: an older loop with smaller, tree-shaded sites and electric hookups at sites 1 through 12, and a newer loop with a mix of open, grassy sites and more shaded options further out. Campers with rigs should note that the non-electric sites involve tight turns between trees. Electric sites 1 through 6 sit on a hill with no water hookups nearby, while sites 7 through 11 are generally easier to navigate and have water access.
The campground sits in forested terrain alongside Enfield Glen, a gorge carved by Enfield Creek. Twelve waterfalls line the Gorge Trail, which connects directly from camp to a seasonal swimming hole fed by Lower Falls. The water is cold even in summer, which keeps the pool from getting overwhelming on warm days. "The trails through the gorge are fascinating and educational," notes Janet R., who also highlights visible fossils in the streambed as a draw for the geologically curious. Fishing is available in the trout stream flowing out toward Cayuga Lake.
Site quality varies considerably depending on which loop you land in. Shaded sites in the new loop fill fast in summer. The bathhouse in the new loop has showers with good water pressure, though Chelsea B. flags that the older facilities have a quirk worth knowing: "Hot is cold and cold is hot." Campers working remotely should expect spotty connectivity, even with satellite internet, particularly outside the main RV clearing. The park also provides compost bags at each site, a detail several visitors mention as a welcome touch.
Crowding patterns shift with the season. Fall brings foliage and fewer crowds, though the swimming area closes by then. Summer weekends draw more day visitors to the gorge and swimming hole. Your camping fee also covers entry to nearby Buttermilk Falls State Park Campground, which has a similar gorge trail and tends to run smaller and quieter. Ithaca's downtown, Cornell, and the broader Finger Lakes wine region are all within easy driving range, making this campground a workable base for multi-day regional exploration. Campers wanting a different setup in the area can also look at Firelight Camps a few miles east.
Description
Robert H. Treman State Park is an area of wild beauty, with the rugged gorge called Enfield Glen as its scenic highlight. Winding trails follow the gorge past 12 waterfalls, including the 115-foot Lucifer Falls, to where visitors can see a mile-and-a-half down the wooded gorge as it winds its way to the lower park. Enjoy nine miles of hiking trails, or swim in a stream-fed pool beneath a waterfall. The outdoor recreation here is spectacular.
