Best Dispersed Camping near Pound Ridge, NY

CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

The forested areas surrounding Pound Ridge, New York feature primarily dispersed camping options where visitors can experience a more primitive outdoor experience. Taconic Hereford Multiple Use Park offers over 900 acres of wooded terrain for dispersed camping, while Hemlock Ridge MUA Dispersed provides similar opportunities within 80 acres of forest land. Both locations require hikers to walk in to established sites, with no developed facilities or amenities available. These natural areas provide alternatives to the more developed campgrounds found elsewhere in Westchester County and neighboring regions.

Dispersed camping regulations in these areas typically require campers to set up at least 150 feet from trails and follow Leave No Trace principles. Limited parking is available at trailheads, with Hemlock Ridge accommodating only 4-6 vehicles in its small lot. According to camper Dawn M., "There are absolutely no amenities whatsoever and barely even a signal here, but it's quiet and off the beaten path." Most sites lack drinking water, toilets, or trash facilities, requiring campers to pack in all supplies and pack out all waste. Cell service varies by location, with Taconic Hereford reportedly maintaining good coverage despite its remote feel. Weather conditions can affect accessibility, particularly during spring and fall when trails may become muddy.

Campers frequently note the peaceful atmosphere and relative solitude these areas provide despite their proximity to populated areas. One visitor to Taconic Hereford described it as having "the feeling of the wild, with the safety of having full cell service," noting it's "less than 10 min drive from town." Wildlife viewing opportunities are common, with extensive trail networks for exploration. While Hemlock Ridge lacks mountain views, its wooded setting appeals to those seeking quiet forest camping. The area attracts rock climbers accessing nearby "the gunks" (Shawangunk Mountains). Recent reviews indicate Taconic Hereford may now charge a $25 nightly fee despite being previously free, suggesting potential management changes to these previously undeveloped camping areas.

    A hidden gem...

99% off people don't even know this area exists. If you want a quiet piece of beautiful forest to truly rough it and go camping for a few days, then this is what you have been looking for. Less then 10 min drive from town, but hiking in and finding a suitable place to make camp has the feeling of the wild, with the safety of having full cell service. There is plenty of trails to explore and wildlife to enjoy, especially since these over 900 acres also back up to another huge plot of protected forests. Hemlock Ridge MUA Dispersed

A place to sleep near the gunks

This isn't a fancy campsite and has no amenities. There is a small(10 car) parking lot and a trail that runs thru 80 acres of forest. Camping is allowed anywhere 150ft from the trail. Normal LNT rules apply. Bugs are relentless. Many climbers stay there for access to the gunks.

    Hemlock Ridge MUA Dispersed

    Pretty cool

If you like dispersed camping, like me- this place is good. There are absolutely no amenities whatsoever & barely even a signal here, but it’s quiet & off the beaten path. The parking lot only holds about 4-5 cars, 6 if you park real tight. There’s no spectacular mountain views from above, but rather a quiet peaceful wooded area & although I only seen/stayed at one camping spot which is literally at about the required 150ft from the road, you can set up your own camp anywhere. I was the only one here & it was a very peaceful & relaxing night
