The Gila National Forest encompasses Apache Creek Campground, a free Forest Service site that draws campers to its well-spaced sites beneath towering ponderosa pines. Located 11 miles from Reserve, this established campground operates year-round and accommodates large RVs on dirt pads scattered throughout the forested setting.
Sites spread out across the property, offering privacy under mature trees that provide substantial shade during warmer months. Outdoors U. notes the campground is "spaced out terrific" with fire rings, picnic tables, and cut tree trunk seating at each site. Some sites include gazebos for additional shelter. A vault toilet serves the campground, and campers consistently report it stays clean.
The campground fills up on weekends but remains quieter during weekdays, with several long-term campers taking advantage of the 14-day stay limit. Firewood collection is permitted on-site, and campfires are allowed year-round. No water or electrical hookups are available, making this a dry camping experience. Cell service proves spotty throughout the area, with T-Mobile particularly unreliable.
Access involves driving on forest roads, and the elevation keeps the area mostly snow-free through winter months. The Apache Creek Store sits directly across the street, providing ice, water, groceries, and other essentials. Reserve offers additional services including a butcher shop, cafes, and fuel stations. Wind picks up during midday hours, creating dusty conditions in spring months.
Pack out all trash as no collection service operates here. For additional options, explore campgrounds around Reserve or consider nearby Armijo Springs Campground for a different forest experience. Arrive early on Friday afternoons to secure preferred sites during busy periods.
