Free to use and accessible via roughly six miles of maintained gravel forest road, Baca Campground sits within Lincoln National Forest outside the small community of Lincoln, New Mexico. The drive in is slow going by design. Campers consistently note the road is well-graded under dry conditions, but at least one reviewer learned the hard way that wet or snowy weather turns it dangerously slick. Do not attempt the road after precipitation.
The campground has a dispersed layout with dozens of pull-in spots arranged along a main loop, plus smaller side roads branching off into more secluded areas. Mature trees provide overhead cover across much of the site, and wildflowers appear in summer months. Cattle graze through the area periodically, which explains the fire rings left scattered across the grounds by previous campers. Sites are spread far enough apart that even on busier weekends, finding a spot with some separation from neighbors is generally possible. "Very remote, lots of wildlife, elk, coyotes, roadrunners," notes Jamie P. in a 2021 visit.
Facilities are minimal but functional. Vault toilets are available at both ends of the campground. There is no water on-site, so campers must bring everything they need for their stay. No trash service is provided either, meaning everything packed in must leave with you. Campfires are permitted, and fire rings are available at many sites. Flies can be a nuisance in warmer months; bug spray is worth packing.
The campground has historical roots as a Civilian Conservation Corps camp from the 1930s. Nearby Lincoln NF Dispersed near Salazar Canyon Road (FR 0057) provides another option for those wanting more flexibility in the same general corridor. Ruidoso is accessible to the north for resupply or a meal before heading in.
Baca works well for self-sufficient campers who carry their own water, travel with a high-clearance vehicle, and want dispersed-style camping without a reservation fee.
