The campground sits in an open field setting with minimal tree cover, creating a different feel from heavily wooded Delaware state parks. Two loops contain 68 sites, with the first loop accommodating larger RVs up to around 45 feet, though maneuvering requires swinging into the grass areas between sites. Sites back up to a central grassy field that provides open space for activities and clear satellite reception from most locations.
Laure D. notes that "sites do sit close to the road but are spacious side to side," with pond-side locations offering more separation than the opposite side. The utilities are positioned at the middle of each pad, making hookup convenient for both RVs and tent campers. Cell coverage varies by carrier, with Verizon showing 2-3 bars and AT&T maintaining 2 bars, though some campers report internet connectivity issues.
The park provides access to Lums Pond for fishing, kayaking, and paddle boating, with a separate day-use area requiring a short drive from the campground. Trail options include a 7.5-mile loop around the pond and connections to the nearby canal trail system. The campground features an exceptional off-leash dog park with pond access and secluded trails. A playground serves families, and the bathhouse includes laundry facilities with three washers and four dryers.
Road access follows Red Lion Road directly to the campground entrance rather than the main park entrance on Howell School Road. The camp store operates seasonally, and firewood sells for $5 per bundle through camp hosts. Reservations fill quickly, particularly for pond-side sites and weekends during peak season.
Campers wanting more forested camping can explore campgrounds around Kirkwood for additional tree cover and shade options.
Description
The newly-renovated campground offers sites with three-point hookups (water, electric and sewer), as well as four horse campsites without hookups. If you prefer a bed to a bedroll, stay in one of our yurts! These round stationary structures with canvas walls feature a single and double bed bunked together, a double bed-sized futon, an outdoor seating area, and outdoor deck.
Campgrounds at Cape Henlopen, Killens Pond, Lums Pond and Trap Pond State Park are open year-round. The Cottages at Indian River Marina are also open year-round, and the campground at Delaware Seashore State Park is open year-round, although during the winter months, it is open for self-contained units only.
The Division of Parks and Recreation has a Central Reservation Service. Although reservations are not required, we strongly recommend that you make one to ensure that accommodations are available. There is no additional expense to make a reservation.
Reservations can be placed for campgrounds, cabins, yurts, the Cottages at Indian River Marina, and Fort Delaware tours, and Killen's Pond Waterpark..
