Cabela's Kearney, NE

SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

A well-lit parking lot off I-80 in Kearney, Nebraska, this Cabela's location gives road-trippers a free, no-frills overnight stop with staff permission to park on the west side of the lot near the employee area. The space is large and open. Solo travelers have noted feeling safe here, particularly after the store closes around 9 p.m. and foot traffic drops off considerably.

Trains are the main thing to know before arriving. Several campers mention hearing them pass nearby throughout the night, though opinions vary on how disruptive they actually are. The lot is also fully lit, which helps with security but works against sleep without blackout curtains or privacy screens. This is a smaller Cabela's location, so there is no restaurant on site, but the store has clean restrooms and snacks available during business hours.

Kearney RV Park & Campground and Fort Kearney State Recreation Area are nearby if you need hookups or a more traditional campsite. Campers with big rigs report no issues maneuvering the lot, and cell service is reliable. One reviewer describes the setting as having "a beautiful cornfield close by making it feel like NE should," which gives a sense of the flat, open landscape surrounding the property. If you are passing through on a cross-country drive and need a safe, low-cost place to rest, this lot is worth adding to your route.

Cabela’s parking lot

Stopped here to sleep for the night driving from Illinois to Colorado. Staff was beyond friendly and said I was free to stay the night on the west side of the parking lot where the employees park it’s huge and open and well lit. I felt very safe as a solo female traveler it is very windy and privacy screens are a must if you want to get any sleep due to the parking lot lights. I had the whole lot to myself, once the store closed at nine. The train is pretty loud. I ended up putting on my noise canceling headphones. You should also note that this Cabela’s is not one of the big ones. it’s really small so it doesn’t have a restaurant or anything like that but it does have clean bathrooms and snack. My only regret is that I got here too early. I could’ve left later because it was pretty hot waiting around for the sun to go down. I’d recommend getting there around seven or eight. If you wanted to still be in the light. I will be staying here again on future road trips.

Good overnight spot

This is just parking lot dry camping at Cabelas so no frills. There is plenty of space for any size rig and it is quiet with the exception of many trains that pass nearby. While they do make a rumble, none have blown their horns so not disturbing, at least for me.

Great overnight spot

It's a few miles off of i80 so obviously not as convenient as a rest area, but a lot quieter and not crowded. Hardly noticed the trains.

Overnight Stay in Kearney

Arrived after midnight and the lot was completely empty. Decided to park closer to the road (left side of main entrance).

The overnight trains are not as bad as people are making them out to be. Woke up to the lot with about 20 cars. Felt very safe. Quiet night.
