Found a nice big spot with sun and shade and a great overlook. Was a touch concerned that it would get ATV trafficy over the weekend as it was at a junction where 3 roads jet off. However upon inspection on mountain bike, they all dead end and aren't very long, so fun for a little bike ride but not much of an ATV or dirt bike adventure.
Being towards the end we saw very few people and it was quite and serene. We did it in our sprinter camper van with 2WD and pickup.
Only issue we had was due to the nature of disbursed camping not the site or area. A car with 3 men showed up Saturday evening. In the morning one of their dogs wandered over to our site (my husband had run into town so I was alone). Owner meandered over and retrieved her, without a word. Later the 3 of them started walking up one of the roads, them one walked across and just with the dog on the rock outcropping technically on our site. He eventually went back to their site. A while later one of the walkers returned and decided to use his metal detector on the road 30 from our site and right behind where I was sitting. There was oddles of space to explore so it was creepy that's he chose to be that close to me. As I got up to walk back to my van, the second dog came running at me barking. The guy eventually called it back and it left me alone, but again not a word.
I LOVE dogs, but I'm not a fan of their humans who don't keep them within their boundaries and let them charge after "the neighbors"
Except for the creepers, it was a wonderful place
Great marshy area for wildlife viewing. Nestled at about 9600 feet with mountains springing up all around
We stayed here when the sites farther up the road were all occupied. I had discounted it at first because someone indicated the need for high clearance. We had no problem with our sprinter except the bumper hitch drug a tiny bit.
Most of the place is better for tents but if you're an experienced driver you can navigate the spot off to the right next to the creek.
Wouldn't recommend without 4wD if raining and wet tho. It's quite sandy and early rutted.
Loved having the window cracked and listening to the creek as I slept.
Worked for an overnight, but the Cabela's is in front of a mall. Definitely a hang out area for silly teens, meeting to cruise and rev their engines. Quieted down about 12:30am when the kids went home to bed
Nice place to camp for free if you don't mind having some neighbors. Close to the highway but little traffic noise. Worked well for an overnight before going into the park the next morning.
Be careful, the location this takes you to is a wildlife refuge. It is posted as day use only, no camping. A super cool place to visit during the day. Be sure you are not on private property or within the refuge and there are spots to pull over to camp in your vehicle.
This is a beautiful park with great dispersed sites! We went quite a ways in and found a site for our campervan. Needed leveling blocks but saw several occupied sites more level. Very secluded!
Stumbled on this spot by asking some ATVers for a recommendation at a gas station when we couldn't find what we were looking for. It's filled with RVs and trailers, and by no means beautiful, but it was perfect for getting off the interstate to sleep for the night, while traveling thru. It's quiet and the staff are friendly. Lots of the tenants appear to be regulars since it is close to thousand of acres of ATV trails and they come to play often.
We stayed here just one night but it was exactly what we need. We were driving east out of central Colorado and wanted to get past Omaha to avoid traveling thru at rush hour. This is about 15 minutes east and just a couple minutes off of I80. Super quiet, nice spacious sites, and very clean.
