Reservations are available at Whitefish Lake State Park Campground, and booking ahead is advisable, especially for summer weekends when the roughly 25 sites fill quickly. Managed by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, this drive-in, walk-in, and boat-in campground sits on the south end of Whitefish Lake, with sites that put campers within a short walk of the water. Nightly rates run $0 to $24, with some reviewers noting out-of-state fees closer to $28. Full hookups with electric, water, and sewer are available for RVs up to 30 feet, though the narrow internal road and compact site layout make anything larger than that a tight fit.
The campground's proximity to the lake is its clearest asset. Paddleboard and kayak rentals are available on-site, and the boat launch gives direct access to Whitefish Lake. Nancy C. puts it simply: "You are just steps from the lake." Anglers and paddlers tend to make the most of the location, and visitors in late summer have reported sightlines across the lake that can include Northern Lights displays on clear nights.
One factor that comes up in nearly every review is the train. Active rail lines run close to the campground, and trains pass through regularly, including overnight. Some campers sleep through it without issue; others find it disruptive enough to regret their site choice. Tucker B. notes that sites on one side of the campground sit directly beneath the tracks, and recommends choosing an open site on the opposite side to reduce the noise. Earplugs and a white noise machine are worth packing regardless.
Facilities are consistently described as clean and well-maintained. Showers are available but token-operated at $3 for six minutes, with tokens purchased from campground staff. The town of Whitefish is a short drive away for resupply, dining, and access to nearby mountain bike and hiking trails. Campers planning a ski trip to the Whitefish area in winter will find this one of the few campgrounds that stays open year-round. Those exploring campgrounds around Whitefish Lake State Park will find additional options including Hidden Moose Lodge, Whitefish RV Park, and Whitefish KOA within a few miles.
May visits tend to be quieter, with fewer crowds and clean facilities, making it a reasonable shoulder-season stop after a Glacier National Park trip. Book early for July Fourth if that timing appeals, since the city's fireworks display over the lake is visible from camp.
