West Yellowstone Dispersed Camping

The entrance is pretty clear, it's one road and lots of pull outs along the way. The roads get bumpier but not unmanageable for any vehicle I would say, I don't know about trailers or anything being pulled behind because there are several potholes that need to be filled and maneuvered around. Many of the spots would be difficult for any vehicle to be level on. If you get a level spot consider yourself lucky. I found a spot on the left hand side about halfway down the road therefore not needing to go all the way to the end. I don't know what this lies beyond my spot. Spots were tight in some cases and a little bigger than others. I appreciate the free camping just outside of Yellowstone, it was only about 10 minutes from the West entrance. As long as yourself contained this could be a great option.

Plenty of single and multiple vehicles pullouts along the road for a big van. Some sites have man made fire pits. Very nice and peaceful with the forest all around. You might be lucky and find a spot within the first mile of driving and no need to go far!

We were looking for a free campsite just outside of the West entrance to Yellowstone and found a USFS Road that goes down to several dispersed camping sites just off the road. No amenities, fires allowed when no warnings are in effect. Relatively quiet, had to go around 4 miles down the road to find an open spot, but we were not bothered the entire night by people nor wildlife. The road is extremely, extremely bumpy so take it slow, and can be soft at times so I would recommend a higher clearance vehicle.
