Gallatin National Forest's free dispersed sites draw campers who want to skip the fee stations, and West Fork Denny Creek is one of the more accessible options along that stretch of forest road outside West Yellowstone. The road in has potholes and the typical washboard texture of a forest two-track, but multiple visitors note it's manageable at low speed without a high-clearance vehicle.
The campground has roughly four to six defined sites, spread out enough that neighbors rarely feel close. A creek runs alongside the camping area, and at least one reviewer found it loud enough to mask nearby noise entirely. Shade and privacy vary by site. Two spots offer better tree cover; the others sit more exposed, which reviewers flagged as a surprise given the forest setting. The area near the creek is under active restoration, so campers should stay aware of any posted closures.
Crowding is the main variable here. Summer weekends can bring RVs that fill the sites quickly, and at least one visitor arrived to find it full and continued north to Upper Cherry Creek, which offers a more rugged but less-trafficked alternative. As Kendra T. puts it, the drive in is "typical forest road bumpy, but not terrible." The campground is free, pets are welcome, and cell service is listed as available. It suits campers who want a no-cost base near the Yellowstone region and don't mind arriving early on busy weekends to secure a spot.
