    Welcome to the Sportsman Lodge

My family and I just purchased the Sportsman Motel in 2021. This was a 2-year process for us by way of Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

Our journey with the Sportsman Motel in Melrose MT started over 7 years ago. It all began with our oldest son Cody, who was deployed with the Army at the time, wrote me a letter. In his letter, he reflects on the passion he and his brother Marcus (also serving in the Army National Guard) and I have for the outdoors. Growing up in the Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia, I have developed a love of the outdoors for as long as I can ever remember. We have always wanted to go west to Montana. In Cody’s letter, he spoke of a small town in Montana called Melrose and about one of the best Rivers to fish in the country, The Big Hole, running through Melrose. He spoke about staying at the Sportsman Motel. Almost immediately upon his return to the states after his deployment, we booked our trip to the Sportsman Motel.

We have been coming back every year, multiple times a year, and staying at the Sportsman ever since. We fell in love with the town, the great people of Melrose and of course the World Class Fishing and Hunting.

In 2018 I approached the previous owners of the Sportsman about buying it. I brought my wife Bonnie out so she can experience what the boys and I have come to love. Bonnie grew up in the Pittsburgh Pennsylvania area and although she had been a city girl at heart, she has gained the love and appreciation of the great outdoors through my own lifetime passion. We have relocated here from Pennsylvania to Montana living our greatest dream and want to help bring the same joy to others.

No matter what you are in search of — hunting, fishing, camping, or just being one with nature – The Sportsman Lodge in Melrose, Montana is your ideal outdoor paradise and home away from home.

For fishing, Sportsman Lodge is in close proximity to some of the best and most famous streams in the country. Our rivers are legendary. If you’re looking for fly fishing or trout, there’s nothing better than a stay in one of our cabins on the water.

The hunting here is as good as it gets anywhere. If you’re after the big game, trophy-class elk, mule deer and whitetail are out there. You’ll also find black bears, moose, bighorn sheep, mountain goats and antelope. If bird hunting and waterfowl are more your style, there are strong sage, sharp-tailed, and mountain grouse, as well as migratory ducks and geese. Melrose is home to a beautiful diversity of habitats and wildlife!

Sportsman Lodge has accommodations for everyone. Our cozy cabins can serve as your mountainside oasis coming completely furnished with various bedroom options and each with a kitchen, living room and bath. Our cabins by the river offer outstanding access for fishing.

Our RV park boasts seventeen, full-service hookup spots allowing you to enjoy our Montana views with all of your creature comforts. Or if you’re looking to get a little closer to nature, it doesn’t get any better than camping out under the vast and wild Montana sky.

Roaming around this part of the country can’t help but impress. In Melrose, while the surroundings are peaceful, the ability to explore the outdoors awakens a strong sense of adventure.

Melrose is a small town on the Big Hole River. Between our 8 rooms, 6 cabins, 17 RV sites and grass tent spaces, we can suit any traveler looking to experience the best of the outdoors.

Note from the owner of Alhambra RV Park: The water at Alhambra RV Park is tested by an independent certified lab to ensure its safety. The non-potable designation was a legal issue with well certification issues inherited from previous owners. As of September 2018 our well status has been granted as public access by the State of Montana and all water testing has yielding safe to drink and use results. Reports are free to be reviewed by anyone at any time. We strive to be a natural setting RV Park in the spirit of National Forest camp grounds with the benefit of electricity, WiFi, and other modern conveniences.

    Well Maintained KOA

Good, level, graveled sites. Full hookup pull-thrus that have a decent amount of space between sites. Bathrooms and showers very clean. Friendly staff. We were here in mid-October so not many traveling campers, but a few long-term

    What a gem!

We pulled off I-15 in little Melrose, MT and imagine our surprise to find this RV park. Beautiful setting, full hookups, well maintained, friendly small small town, near Big Hole National battlefield, great restaurant in town. Would be a perfect place to stop for the night or a few nights on the road.

Typical KOA but not ADA or electric car friendly

This is a typical KOA. First the good: Friendly helpful staff until their gone at closing time. Little mini store with a few essentials. Clean bathrooms and showers and clean laundry room with several washers/dryers.$2.00 per load to wash. Can't remember how much to dry. Very cool pinball machine that costs 25 cents per game. Fun fun fun! Another bathroom/shower in middle of park but I never looked inside that one. 65 sites that most have full hook-up and pull-through. A few cool tent sites with gas BBQs. Some cool looking cabins but I never looked inside one. I'm here on 8/24/2024 and RV park is sold out except 3 pull-through sites. All tent sites were full. I don't know about the cabins. Cool playground for kids and large mostly gravel dog run. Edit added: AT&T has 5G and three bars. KOA has wifi but slow slow slow I got 3MPS so instead of KOA wifi I used my iPhone Personal Hotspot that worked great. THE BAD(and reason for only 3 stars): All gravel roads and sites throughout the park. Very close together. Some sites have a very narrow strip of grass. Some of the picknick tables need to be re-painted. Unfortunately while eating breakfast you could be 2 feet away from the next RV dumping their sewer. P.U. The luxury sites don't have that problem. They are at the end of each row and only have a neighbor on the drivers side. I think well worth the extra 17 bucks. Not ADA friendly. Very hard for someone with a walker to get around because of gravel roads/sites. Someone with a wheel chair near impossible. Has a nice handicap shower in main office building. Only problem is that once I take my walker in with me it's very tight and no room to move around. Not EV car friendly. There is a$250 fine and eviction if you plug in your car. The person at the front desk told me the$250 fine and eviction is because EVs overload the outdated system and cause a fire. This KOA is an older one and was wired before EVs. Each individual site has its own 30 amp and 50 amp circuit breaker. Some trees but few and far between. No pool or hot tub. Final thoughts: Make reservations well in advance if you can. This KOA is the best game in town and is mostly sold out in summer. I think(sorry I don't know for sure) there is only one other RV park in town and from what I can tell, it is a much older one. I would proceed with caution before I booked it. Good traveling. See you on the road.

    Goose Bay Marina and Campground

Very nice newly developed full service campground.

This is a newly developed campground, with two shower houses(rare in Montana) with flush toilets, as well as vault toilets. The sites are all spacious enough to accommodate two vehicles, both towing trailers or boats. There are three types of sites in the campground, Rustic (no water, sewer or electricity ), Electrical Only (no water or sewer) and Full Hook-up (water, sewer and electrical hook-ups). Campground has a store and gas is available. The day use area has a frisbee-golf coarse and beach volleyball. I was very impressed with the campground, leaps and bounds above the old campground.

Small and no space between campers

This is not a place he would stay long term it’s just merely a pitstop. They do have a little riverfront great that runs by it but otherwise it’s just a parking lot.

    Choose Another Location

This place is not a good choice. It is dirty and not maintained except for the bathhouse which is decent. This property caters mostly to long-term residents in older RVs and mobile homes. It is not a place for Dyrt campers wanting to get away from it all. I was the only short-term traveler, and I was charged$35 for a 20 amp electric only site. That was too much. I have been on the road full time for eight months and this is the least attractive campground yet. I don’t like to criticize other reviews, but the other rating of 4 stars is a joke. It is more like a 1. I gave it 2 because the people were very friendly and the bathhouse was a B-. There are huge pot holes in the entrance which are not RV friendly. There is no garbage dumpster and no sanitary dump. I had to drive a gas station in town to do this.

    Nice location

Nice location for an overnight rest spot. We had a tent site, close to the road, but traffic wasn’t bad after dark. Site was grassy. No fires allowed for obvious reasons. We were the only tent guests. Most people looked like they were long term RV’rs. IMMACULATE bathrooms and showers with hot water and pressure ! There’s a hot springs nearby, a water slide, golf course and resort hotel/casino. Easy access to I-15. Only drawback I could see was that there was dog poop everywhere. Bags were provided, but apparently people don’t use them :(

    Convenient to Interstate

Well run, clean campground with lots of pull through sites with full hook ups. Efficiently run. Check in was quick and easy with a golf cart escort to my site.  The layout is pretty condensed so I was quite close to my neighbor. Campground was quiet, some road noise outside. An excellent option to break up a drive on I-90.

    Great spot, very friendly

This is a great spot in a tiny town south of Butte Montana. They have a couple cabins, several motel rooms and about 10 full hookup, all grass, RV spots. Also a large area for car/tent camping. The grounds are meticulously maintained by the owner and it has nice views of the bluffs and mountains all around it. Walking distance to the restaurant and bar in town if that’s your thing. Quality hookups at each site, and each site has its own trash can. Clean bathrooms and laundry on site. Owners are very present and attentive on site and super friendly. Picnic tables at every site. One shared fire pit out front of the office. It’s in a very small town, with several fishing spots nearby. Very peaceful location. We would stay again.

A few things to be aware of:

    • All sites are back in, but they are reasonably wide and very long.
    • It is about a mile or two from the interstate which is convenient but you can occasionally hear a large truck pass by.
    • There is a train track nearby, we heard about one train per day in the morning.
    • We were here in July and there were some mosquitos. If you plan to be outside probably bring a citronella candle or bug spray.

A Hidden Gem on the River with Exceptional Hospitality!

Our stay at Bernie and Sharon’s Riverfront RV Park was absolutely fantastic! The location is stunning – nestled right by the river, offering breathtaking views and a peaceful atmosphere. It’s the perfect spot to relax and reconnect with nature.

The hospitality was truly exceptional. Bernie and Sharon went above and beyond to make our stay comfortable and enjoyable. We enjoyed a cozy campfire thanks to their generosity in providing a fire ring and even a couple of logs to get us started. Their thoughtfulness made the experience even more memorable!

We also camped in our Tesla, and the park was fully equipped for EV travelers with a 14-50 amp outlet, making it super convenient to charge our vehicle while we enjoyed the great outdoors.

The amenities were spotless, and the grounds were beautifully maintained. Whether you’re looking to fish, explore the surroundings, or simply unwind by the water, this RV park has everything you need for a perfect getaway.

Thank you, Bernie and Sharon, for an amazing experience! We’ll definitely be back for another unforgettable stay.

Horrible and rude owner!! Stay away!

The rudest people to deal with, especially an employee named Dan. Do not stay here and do not expect any kind of customer service from this place. Horrible attitude and horrendous manners.

Will never stay here in the future nor recommend this place to anyone!

Not the only RV Park in the area; the owner should be happy to have business and money coming in!! Rude to the max!!

Lovely hosts and well maintained grounds

Enjoyed our stay as a stopover on way south to Big Sky. Large grounds, well maintained with green grass for the kid to run in. Walk to the river is about 3-5 min. Spaces were large. People we met there loved it so much that they’ve come back year and year again. Best of all is the story of the host… offers a safe and fun place, rescued animals, keeps camping costs affordable bc had 9 kids and couldn’t afford to stay at RV parks, etc.

    Cardwell General Store and Campground

    Big commercial campground

We camped here only because the Lewis and Clark Caverns State Park (where we have often camped on trips out west) was full on fourth of July weekend. The host told us about the Cardwell Campground further west.

So we were cranky after the extra drive and the late hour, hoping to find an open site on the holiday weekend. There is also a market and gift shop there. You have to call the host and he comes to escort you to a site.

I kept asking him what the rate was but he ignored me and spoke to my husband! Only after the credit card went through did I find out we were paying $65 for one night, even with a "veteran's discount." Under other circumstances we wouldn't have stayed there as we do not usually stay in such expensive RV parks. We were to learn that private campgrounds rates have gone up.

The park was well kept and we had electric plus sewer and water.

    Riverfront RV Park

One of our favorite Parks! So much history here and well maintained. Lots of trees and shade! Sharon and her Camp Hosts/ Maintenance staff do a wonderful job keeping this place clean and trimmed.
Terry and Mike meet you at your arrival and usher you to your site. We have a 40’ w/tow and opted for a pull thru for 1 night. Sharon stops by and takes your payment, and checks on if you need anything! Great to have met the matriarch of the Park! They offer Good Sam and Military rates as well!

    No Frills

This is a small, no frills site just outside of Helena, MT. No hookups for RVs; Vault toilets, which were very clean. Pack in/Pack out as there are no trash receptacles. Moderate road noise until dark. Beautiful views and dark skies at night for stargazing

    Middle of the road

Good amenities for a full time RVer, probably a little lean for someone looking for a resort feel. $35 a day for electric, $36 for water, $37 for full hookups.

Laundry and showers available, but I did not use. Manager is on site, and while it’s not a looker, it’s kept nice. Nice view to the west for sunsets, very easy access to I-10. A good stopover if you need a day’s rest with hookups, it was never full while I was there.

    Beautiful

Camp sites are fairly spread out, there’s room for RVs if that’s your style. Boat launch available for easy access and a large enough parking lot to park your trailer. There’s slight phone service in some spots. Lots of rock formations in the area to climb and explore. There’s a few trail heads to get to the peaks and get an amazing view of the lake and surrounding valley.

    Hellgate Campground

    Great Group Use area

Large campground on the east side of Canyon Ferry. Two very large group use areas. If you like camping in the trees you will need to get one of the first several sites along the creek, most of the other campsites are in the open unless a large cottonwood is growing on the edge of the lake. Large day use shelter. Boat ramp with lots of parking for boat trailers. Lots of pull through sites for RVs.

    Horrible Washboard Road…..Otherwise OK

The campground is nice enough, lots of brown grass throughout the park that if irrigated would look fantastic. There is a base rate for your camp spot the an up-charge of $5 a night if you have an electric spot and another $5 a night if your site has electricity. Using the dump station is $10 if you are not in full hookups, fresh water is available at two fill stations, unfortunately you cannot attach your own water filter to the fill stations as they have a hose that is not threaded and you cannot remove the hose.

THE ROAD….I’ve been on LOTS of washboarded roads in the US deserts and Mexico, but never such an unrelenting brutal one as the one to the campground from the highway. I am not the fly over at high speed guy, You may not feel the bumps in your car but your RV or trailer is being trashed. The road is also extremely dusty. If not for that road I would recommend this park, great facilities, launch ramp, docks but I am already dreading the drive back out.

The bathrooms and showers are spotless! Showers are 3 min for 25 cents.

The office staff and campground Hosts can’t be beat, the very best. They helped me immensely finding a spot during a busy summer week.

    Nothing special but reliable

Easy access from interstate and Rv friendly fuel stations. Located on a hill with well maintained gravel roads and pull throughs 30/50 Amp and full hookups. Wifi fast but weak, no laundry (yet), no cable and the OTA TV is crappie. Open skies for satellite TV, 2 miles from downtown. We didn't use the bathrooms or showers but they are available. Lots of spaces designated for tent campers.
