What to do
Water activities on Delmoe Lake: The lake provides ideal conditions for paddleboarding and other non-motorized water activities. "The water is nearly always calm and great for paddle boarding!! There is dirt bike trikes up above and didn't mind it at all, in fact I thought it was awesome for those that enjoy biking," notes a visitor at Delmoe Lake Campground.
Winter camping options: Several areas maintain winter accessibility for cold-weather glamping adventures. "Best out of the 7 campsites we visited on our Montana trip! It's gorgeous and open and has trees you can easily sling up hammocks. Gorgeous lake," reported a winter visitor to Delmoe Lake.
Historic exploration: Visit the Missouri Headwaters State Park where three rivers converge to form the Missouri. "You can see how Lewis and Clark traveled up the Missouri by checking out the dug out canoe that can be found at the entrance of the Missouri Headwaters State Park Campground," explains a camper.
What campers like
Spacious RV sites: Many travelers appreciate the thoughtful layout of sites at campgrounds near Boulder. "Our 'new' spot was in the back of the park on an end. We had some lovely views! We had a pull through site, gravel, full hook-ups. Our 32ft 5th wheel and tow vehicle fit nicely in the spot," explains a visitor to Three Forks KOA Journey.
Cave exploration: The caverns provide a unique experience beyond typical outdoor activities. "The family will love this trip! I call it the Bat Cave," shares a visitor about the Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park tours, noting that "the caverns has been modified since I was young making paths and walking through easier with better footing and railing for balance."
Shower facilities: Clean bathroom facilities rank highly in visitor satisfaction. "Bathrooms were exceptionally large. Clean with great water pressure in the showers," notes a camper at one location, while another mentions that "the bathrooms though rustic smelled amazing!" at Missouri Headwaters State Park.
What you should know
Seasonal limitations: Water activities may be restricted during certain periods. "They also occasionally have periods where the swimming is forbidden due to algae," notes a camper at Delmoe Lake.
Reservation requirements: Many campgrounds fill quickly during peak season. "This KOA is the best game in town and is mostly sold out in summer," reports a visitor to Helena North KOA.
Site conditions: Some locations offer less privacy than others. "Sites are all nice and flat and level for tent camping. Vault toilets are very clean. There is a playground if you have kids. Decent hiking, unfortunately the caves themselves were closed during our stay," shares a camper about Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park.
Mosquito presence: Insect activity can be substantial in certain locations. "When the sun sets in June and July the mosquitos will come out. They are quite nasty but an hour after sunset they are gone, having a campfire going helps too," advises a Missouri Headwaters State Park visitor.
Tips for camping with families
Educational programs: Some parks offer special activities for children. "Did you know you can print out a packet for your little ones to become Cub Rangers at this State Park?" asks a visitor to Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park, noting that there are "great amenities for both camping and RV's with a child's playground located on the camp."
Playground access: Several campgrounds feature dedicated play areas. "We camped here with a group of families and the playground was nice for the kids. There aren't many trees and the land is flat but we were able to really keep a decent eye of the kids running around because of it," shares a visitor about Lewis & Clark Caverns.
Water slide proximity: The Fairmont RV Resort offers additional recreational options. "If you like waterslides or golfing this will be hard to beat. Nice and clean areas with a great little store," notes one camper, while another mentions they were "offered a day pass to the golf course and water park at no cost for the day."
Tips from RVers
Full hookup availability: Multiple locations offer complete services. "Frost free spigots were good especially since the weather at night was below freezing," notes a Fairmont RV Resort visitor.
Pull-through accessibility: Several campgrounds accommodate larger vehicles. "Easy access from interstate and Rv friendly fuel stations. Located on a hill with well maintained gravel roads and pull throughs 30/50 Amp and full hookups," explains a visitor to 2 Bar Lazy H RV Campground.
Limited shade: Be prepared for sun exposure at certain locations. "All gravel roads and sites throughout the park. Very close together. Some sites have a very narrow strip of grass," notes a Helena North KOA visitor, adding that there are "some trees but few and far between."
