Cottonwood Campground sits within Canyon Ferry Wildlife Management Area, off a route that provides no highway signage to announce its presence. Campers planning a stay near camping near Townsend will find this a low-key, no-frills stop with four established sites, picnic tables, and metal fire rings. The campground is free to use, though it provides no water and no trash service, so self-sufficiency is essential.
As Dexter I. notes, "while the campground is near Canyon Ferry Lake it is not on the lake." Boat access is available from a day-use launch area past the campground, connecting to a side channel of the Missouri River. Mosquitoes are a recurring issue, with multiple visitors reporting heavy insect pressure at all hours. Noise is also a factor. The campground sits close to a highway and train tracks, and coyotes are audible at night.
One of the four sites is ADA-designated, with a large concrete pad, and the vault toilet on-site is ADA-accessible as well. Cell service is listed as available. Cleanliness has been inconsistent across visits, with some reviewers noting trash left by previous occupants. Birds are active and visible near the water. Midweek arrivals tend to find more sites open.
Campers wanting lakeside access or more developed facilities might consider Indian Road Campground to the south, or Silos Marina & Campground further northwest along the reservoir.
