    Watkins Mill State Park Campground

    Peaceful

We stayed Sunday-Wednesday and it was very peaceful. Sites are not right on top of each other and it looks like they all have a fire pit and picnic table. There are only a handful of paved spots and you will need leveling blocks on the gravel. Showers and bathrooms are clean and the hosts are very nice. New asphalt roads throughout the park; nice for walking, biking, etc. Be sure to get biscuits & gravy at “The General Store” just down the road from the park entrance.

    Kansas City East-Oak Grove KOA

Crammed in a tent camping field...

Let's Share COVID and a campfire song. When we booked a tent site in the KOA we didn't expect much but assumed it would work for the night while driving across the USA.  Upon arrival we were a little put off by being stuck with several other tents in a field and noticed we were expected to share our fire ring with the tent next door... this was not ok with us and we left promptly and snagged a nice spot in the nearby Blue Springs Recreation Area. Traveling during summer 2020 has been interesting and to expect strangers to share a fire ring and be crammed very close during a pandemic is not only careless but not fun. UGH

    Worlds of Fun Village

    Novel Campground in Kansas City

This was an interesting stay at the Worlds of Fun campground. Located on the property there are RV sites and rental cabins. All RV sites were concrete with 50/30/20 amp, water and sewer. Back-in sites on rows 1 and 3 and pull through sites on row 2.

The theme park offered discounted tickets when staying at the campground and parking for the parks was included. Worlds of Fun and Oceans of Fun are internally connected, making it easy to walk between the two.

There is a pool, hot tub, laundry and clean bathrooms with showers. The campground did attempt to improve privacy with strategically placed trees and shrubs.

Row 1 (sites 1-20) is along a busy highway with semi truck noise 24 hours a day. I recommend either paying more for the pull-through (further from the road) or the back in sites 69-82 in row 3.

Security was disappointing, as there was no gate to the campground, nor a gate around it. So our campsite (site 2) that backed up to the road was 10 feet off the public sidewalk. Reviews of this campsite on other websites mentioned some petty theft, so we kept our outdoor compartments locked (nothing was stolen).

    Basswood Country RV Resort

A great place to take the kids/grandkids

We have been camping at Basswood for several years, first with our children and now with our grandchildren. Basswood provides amenities that are great for entertaining children, includinga swimming pool and splash park, two playgrounds, a basketball goal, and fishing. Every weekend there are organized activities such as arts and crafts, fishing contests, duck races and frozen t-shirt contests in the pool, and a Saturday evening outdoor movie. There is a great little store with alcohol for the adults; ice cream treats, which we enjoy after a swim; and nearly any key item you might have forgotten to pack. Most roads throughout the campground are paved, and the campground is generally well-maintained. We appreciate the full-service RV spots, but there are very nice bathroom facilities, including showers, in two locations in the park.

    Lake Paradise Resort

    A gem being polished!

We had a fun and relaxing time and loved the woodsy feel to it. We stayed here for a weekend in July 2020 and had a great time!  It is under new ownership and they are working to remodel and renovate all areas. I got to meet one of the owners and one of the owner's kids who works there and they were very nice and very helpful.  In fact, all staff I had contact with were! We had a nice full hookup RV site with a very woodsy feel.  Well shaded, grass and trees, view of water and nice space around us. Gravel site with picnic table and fire ring.  The pool is renovated and very nice. It is very large, zero entry, up to mostly around 5 ft deep with a small area that was 9ft; there is a children's area with a sprinkler. Roads throughout campground are gravel, not paved, if that makes a difference with kids bringing scooters or bikes.  We drove around to see the rest of the campground and saw lots of sites that I'd like to camp in when we come back. The cabins look nice, too. Waved at people sitting in front of them, but did not see inside them.  I'm looking forward to go here again and excited to see the updates they make over the next year!

Note: Included in your camp fee you get 2 free daily passes per night of camping to the pool and a discounted rate for any other swimmers; so for our family with 4 we had the free passes go to the parents and paid $3 each for the kids to swim & we did this two days.  As long as you have the wrist band on you can come and go all day to the pool.

Cons: quite a bit of poison oak around the fish cleaning area, shade at the pool is at a minimum, my phone (AT&T) could not get service there.

    Basswood Country RV Resort

    Tidy and well run park

This park is convient to I-29 but far enough off the highway to be quiet and peaceful. Tent sites, full hookups as well as rooms and cabins are available. As a point of interest, this used to be a favorite fishing spot of President Harry S. Truman, check out the Mother in Law cabin—built at his request.

    Knob Noster State Park Campground

Great relaxing campground with many activities

Beautiful secluded campsite - amenities were clean. Kayak rentals were available for Lake Buteo - kayakers were out on the lake, and the lake has a trail all around it. Nice trail. The other lake, Clearfork Lake, was great for fishing for us! We did have a problem with Raccoons, but with our site being on the very edge of the sites I think that may be inevitable.

    Knob Noster State Park Campground

    Quiet, clean and family friendly

Knob Noster State Park is close to Whiteman AFB and towns nearby for amenities. The park is clean and quiet. Weekends often mean a nearly full campground so make sure to reserve ahead! Weekdays there are few campers. The park is well shaded and it includes primitive and electric sites with water pumps within easy access to all sites. There are two sets of campground bathrooms—one is near the front and is brand new (2018); the other bathrooms are half way to the back of the campground. A dump station is at the front of the campground with a pull through drive. Ice, small grocery items and items are all available for purchase from the camp host. You can also rent kayaks either hourly or by the half or full day. There are lots of great trails for hiking, weekend park programs at the campground amphitheater, a playground and basketball courts. There is no WiFi in this park yet but I hear it’s coming soon. This is a great little park!!

Guide to Grain Valley

Cabin camping near Grain Valley, Missouri offers access to multiple state parks and recreational areas situated within the rolling hills of western Missouri. The region experiences four distinct seasons with summer highs averaging in the upper 80s and winter temperatures frequently dropping below freezing. Most cabin rentals in the area require advance booking, particularly during the peak summer season when temperatures and humidity can be high.

What to do

Hiking trails: Watkins Mill State Park Campground features a 3.8-mile paved trail that encircles the 100-acre lake. "The trail wraps the lake and connects to the edge of the campground. There are a couple historic sites not far on the side of the lake, quick little drive," reports Jason C. The trail is suitable for both hiking and biking.

Fishing opportunities: Basswood Country RV Resort maintains five small fishing lakes where no license is required. "You could fish in the lakes and didn't even need a license. We watched kids get excited as they caught fish after fish," shares Shannon G. The resort provides access to basic fishing supplies at their on-site store.

Historical exploration: Watkins Mill State Park Campground preserves a 19th-century woolen mill alongside cabin accommodations. "If you like history, take a tour of the woolen mill part. Very cool," notes Josh P. Tours of the historical buildings run daily during summer months and on weekends during spring and fall.

What campers like

Pool access: Lake Paradise Resort maintains a large swimming pool that recently underwent renovation. "The pool is renovated and very nice. It is very large, zero entry, up to mostly around 5 ft deep with a small area that was 9ft; there is a children's area with a sprinkler," describes Julie B. Pool access includes two free daily passes per night of camping.

Dog-friendly amenities: Kansas City East-Oak Grove KOA provides dedicated spaces for pets. "Great for dogs. Tent site was nice," states Resa B. The campground features two fenced dog parks according to Roy T., who noted, "Clean campground. Nice grounds. Two good fenced dog parks."

Secluded retreat settings: Milo Farm Sacred Land Retreat offers a more isolated cabin experience away from busier campgrounds. The property features multiple cabin options including their Hippie Trailer and Bunkhouse accommodations, set within a peaceful environment that emphasizes natural surroundings.

What you should know

Seasonal considerations: Many cabin facilities have limited winter services. Worlds of Fun Village operates seasonally from March through October. "Stopped here on our way south for spring break. The amusement park was not open yet, so the campground area was relatively quiet," explains Deb M.

Noise factors: Some locations experience noise from nearby transportation routes. Basswood Country RV Resort sits under flight paths from Kansas City International Airport. "The campground is on the final approach for the airport, so you get to see a lot planes flying overhead, which you don't even notice cause they are quieter than they used to be, and I think they shut down flights around 10pm," explains Brian A.

Location access: Many cabin sites are positioned specifically for easy highway access. "Easy access to Interstate and pull through sites were long enough for our truck and 32' trailer without having to unhitch. Stayed just one night as we passed through," notes Roy T. about Kansas City East-Oak Grove KOA.

Tips for camping with families

Weekend activities: Several campgrounds schedule regular weekend programming. "Every weekend there are organized activities such as arts and crafts, fishing contests, duck races and frozen t-shirt contests in the pool, and a Saturday evening outdoor movie," explains Tori G. about Basswood Country RV Resort.

Biking opportunities: Knob Noster State Park Campground provides safe areas for children to cycle. "Knob Noster State Park is a great park for the grandkids to ride their new bikes on the level smooth campground road in safety," reports John J. The park's road system forms a loop around camping areas.

Swimming options: Multiple cabin locations feature water access beyond just pools. "The lake has a trail all around it. Nice trail. The other lake, Clearfork Lake, was great for fishing for us!" shares Kelsie L. about Knob Noster State Park.

Tips from RVers

Site privacy: Consider location within campgrounds for maximum space. "The RV sites were right on top of each other so would not great. Very little green space but had a lot of amenities," notes Ashley S. about Kansas City East-Oak Grove KOA.

Overnight convenience: Green Acres at Red Brick Farmhouse provides cabin options as well as small RV sites near I-70. "Out in the country surrounded by corn fields. Owned by a lovely couple who reside on the property in their old farmhouse. Not far off of I70, but absolutely no road noise. A great place to stay after a long day of driving," reports Moe F.

Hookup access: Check specific site arrangements before booking. "Only negatives were our hookups were literally in the next site next to their table, and their fire ring was very close to our trailer," cautions Roy T. about the Kansas City East-Oak Grove KOA layout.
