The spur trail is marked by a wooden post with a small tent symbol. Tent spaces: 2-3 Description: This campsite is situated at the end of the spur trail 20 feet below the BRT on the southern flank of the ridge right on Topper Lake. The ground in the entire campsite is gently sloping towards the lake, but there are at least two good spots to put up a tent that are comparatively flat. Campsite is spacious, with enough room (and trees) to put up a tarp. Just across the lake, high cliffs mark the southern border of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.

Wish we stayed longer!

The Border Route Trail is a 65+ mile hiking trail that runs thru the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in northern Minnesota. It also follows the international border with Ontario, Canada. Depending on your direction the Topper Lake campsite is a great end to your thru hike or a nice reprieve after a long first day. We headed eastbound on the route so it was our first campsite of the trip and came along after an 18+ mile day. The campsite is on a short (maybe the shortest of all the sites) spur trail off the BRT. It slopes down from the main trail right up to beautiful Topper Lake. The site itself has a bit of a slope so not great flat surface for your tent but it didn't bother any of us. We also had a couple hammock campers in our group that had amazing spots right next to the lake. Also at the site is a pit toilet, large log benches and fire pit. There's a nice sloping rock ledge that goes into the water and is perfect to lay back on and relax at Waters edge or dry off on after a swim in the crisp clean lake. The lake water is perfect for drinking we filtered ours and it tasted amazing! This site can also be reached from the parking lot of the Mucker Lake Trailhead.
