Pine Lake Campsite

This hike-in campground requires backpackers to travel about half a mile from the Border Route Trail via the Pine-Pike portage. Pine Lake Campsite sits a couple hundred feet below the main trail within Superior National Forest, offering tall pines and open space with a soft pine needle floor. The established fire pit provides a focal point for the site.

While Pine Lake itself remains hidden from camp, a short walk leads to clear water suitable for filtering. The site serves backpackers well on multi-day Border Route Trail journeys, typically reached after several days of hiking. Those planning extended trips in the region can explore campgrounds around Grand Marais for resupply options before heading into the backcountry.

Great room, without a view

Pine Lake Campsite on the Border Route Trail (dividing Minnesota from Canada) was a great site. Tall pines surrounded us with plenty of open space and a soft pine floor. Fire pit was nice and open as well. There was no view of Pine Lake from the site but it was just a quick walk down to get nice clear filterable drinking water. The fog was pretty heavy when we were there so no views across the lake but as par for all the BRT sites, I'm sure it was lovely! For us, heading eastbound from the start of the trail, we hit this site on day 3 after 3 days of 18, 12ish and 13 or 14ish mile days. The site is a couple hundred feet below the BRT on the Pine/Pike portage and is just a little less than 1/2 a mile from the main trail.
