Situated on a hillside above Elk Lake in Williamsburg, Michigan, Whitewater Township Park Campground runs from mid-May through late September with sites that range from shaded pine-row loops to open spots with sightlines across the water. The park sits on a slope, and reviewers consistently point to sites 7, 8, and 9 as the ones with unobstructed lake views. Get a site at the top of the hill if one is available. The campground is township-run and receives no state funding, which shapes the fee structure in ways worth knowing before arrival.
Water access is a genuine draw here. The park sits directly on Elk Lake, which connects via the Torch River into Torch Lake, giving boaters a navigable chain without trailering to a second launch. A boat launch is on site, though there's a separate $5 fee to use it. Firewood runs $6 a bundle and is available on site. The heavily wooded terrain, with tall pines throughout, also makes the campground well-suited to hammock campers working between trees. Campers exploring places to camp near Williamsburg will find this one of the more water-connected options in the region.
Facilities include electric hookups, drinking water, a dump station, and a central bathroom and shower building. Showers are quarter-operated at 25 cents per seven minutes. Opinions on cleanliness vary across reviews: Corrie calls it "dump on site, very clean bathrooms and helpful staff," while a 2024 visit flagged inconsistent upkeep and maintenance issues. The campground has one bathroom building serving the full site, which can feel limited during busy weekends.
Reservations open in early April and fill quickly. The access road carries a rough-road warning, so lower-clearance vehicles should take that into account. RVs up to 50 feet are accommodated with electric hookups. The surrounding area gives campers easy reach to Elk Rapids and Traverse City for resupply, and nearby wineries are a common rainy-day destination based on reviewer mentions. For additional nearby options, Everflowing Waters Campground is a few miles to the southwest.
This campground fits boaters, anglers, and campers who want direct lake access with basic amenities and are comfortable with a township-managed setup where services can vary by staffing.
