Reservations are available year-round at Hartwick Pines State Park Campground, and with nightly rates running $41 to $100, planning ahead pays off. The campground sits within Hartwick Pines State Park outside Grayling, Michigan, and accommodates rigs up to 80 feet with full hookups including electric, water, and sewer. Paved roads run through the grounds, good for bike riding and easy to navigate on arrival. Sites range from more open spots to wooded ones with reasonable tree cover, so it's worth requesting a specific type when booking.
Cleanliness comes up repeatedly across reviews. Showers and restrooms draw consistent praise, with multiple campers noting they found facilities spotless throughout multi-night stays. Barbara K. puts it directly: "showers and bathrooms were NEVER not spotless." Camp hosts add a human touch, keeping campers informed about activities and, in at least one reviewer's experience, offering coffee or hot chocolate in the mornings.
The park's old-growth forest trail is the main draw for most visitors. The trees are notably tall, and the trail connects to a logging history museum and a small chapel in the woods. Ranger programs run during summer months, and a small lake within the park gives anglers a nearby option. One reviewer notes a hill behind their site with a short trail offering a view down over the campground. Campers should bring their own firewood, as at least one visitor found the supply limited on-site.
Cell coverage runs thin here, with AT&T reporting around one bar. No beach access exists within the park, though rivers close by support fishing, canoeing, and tubing. Campers interested in camping near Hartwick Pines State Park will find additional options in the surrounding area, including River Park Campground and Trails Campground. The town of Grayling, a short drive away, covers practical needs with laundry, coffee, and local restaurants.
Hartwick Pines works well for RV campers wanting full hookups with trail access, and for families interested in the logging history programming the park provides throughout the season.
