Recommend going in the off season if you want to visit. The park is overrun in the summer months and week days in the spring can be overrun with school groups. That being said, we have visited here for 15 years and continue to return and invite friends! The hiking trails are extensive and fun. You walk they creek beds, climb boulders and waterfalls. There is horseback riding and canoes/kayaks available nearby. Also a nice visitor center and historic home onsite. We find Geodes in the riverbed often!
Hartwick Pines is a quiet campground in central Mi. It features old growth forest on the hiking trails, multiple ranger programs each week, hosts that give you coffe or hot chocolate in the morning, a beautiful visitor center and main trails, plus side trails that are less traveled so you rarely see anyone else! There is a small lake for fishing, an old logging community with some programming in busier months.
LMRA has been a yearly visit for our family for over 15 years. Two loops have put toilets, two have flush. No showers or electric but that is ok because the sites are huge, the quiet is amazing and the location is second to none! We love the trails as the campground is right next to Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness Area. They have weekly ranger programs for kids as well. The beach is clean and the swimming is amazing!
