Several state parks and private campgrounds around Dunkirk, Maryland provide cabin camping options ranging from rustic one-room rentals to furnished multi-bedroom units with electricity and full beds. Cherry Hill Park in College Park offers furnished cabins with electricity and comfortable beds, while Patapsco Valley State Park features mini cabins with electric heat. Martinak State Park provides mini cabins equipped with full beds, bunk beds, and air conditioning. At Westmoreland State Park, cabin options include two-bedroom units with waterfront views, fireplaces, and screened porches. According to one visitor at Martinak State Park, "We rented a mini cabin and it had a full bed, two bunk beds and AC which was such a nice amenity. The site had a fire ring, grill and picnic table."

Cabin styles range from basic one-room structures to more spacious family accommodations with multiple bedrooms. Washington DC/Capitol KOA in Millersville offers pet-friendly cabin rentals that accommodate families, while Tuckahoe State Park has basic cabins on both electric and non-electric loops. Most state park cabins require advance reservations, particularly during summer months when they fill quickly. Pohick Bay Campground and Bull Run Regional Park maintain cabins year-round, making them suitable for off-season getaways. At Tuckahoe State Park, "Mini cabin D is pet friendly but one of the few," notes one camper, highlighting the limited pet-friendly options at some locations.

Most cabin rentals provide beds with mattresses but require visitors to bring their own linens, pillows, and towels. Kitchen facilities vary significantly between locations - some offer only outdoor fire rings with cooking grates, while others include small refrigerators or microwaves. Camp stores at locations like Cherry Hill Park and Westmoreland State Park sell firewood, ice, and basic supplies. Patapsco Valley State Park requires purchasing firewood on-site due to invasive species regulations. For more substantial grocery needs, nearby towns offer full-service stores. Cabin campers should pack cooking utensils, dishwashing supplies, and food storage containers, as these items are rarely provided even in the more furnished units.

      Bull Run Regional Park

Site #133 — Great site once you figure out the best way to get into it

We stayed in site #133 with our 34'10" travel trailer/toy hauler. Overall, we really like the site. It's spacious, fairly level, heavily wooded, and feels surprisingly private. There's plenty of room around the camper, and although there are other campsites and cabins nearby, the trees provide a lot of separation. We had a nice large area for our chairs, fire pit, picnic table, and dogs. The biggest thing to know about #133 is the approach. We were instructed to pass the site, go around the loop, and then make a left turn into it. With our nearly 35' trailer, that would have required an extremely tight, almost 90-degree turn between the trees, and we did not feel we could safely make it. There is actually visible damage on one of the trees at the entrance, so it appears others may have had difficulty with the turn as well. Instead, we approached from the opposite direction and positioned the camper with our doors facing the main campsite area. That put the water and electric hookups on the opposite side, but our hoses and cord were long enough to run underneath the camper and reach without a problem. Once we figured that out, the site worked very well for us. I initially thought we probably wouldn't choose #133 again because of the awkward setup, but after spending the weekend here, I would. Now that we know how to approach and position our trailer, it really is a nice site. If you're bringing a longer travel trailer, just be prepared to do a little maneuvering and make sure your water hose and electrical cord have enough length if you decide to orient your camper the way we did.

      Little Bennett Campground

      Great Potential?

We stayed at Little Bennett starting on Labor Day Monday and left before the weekend, so it is hard to say how this looks when the campground is full of life. They had quite a few activities for families and a pavilion capable of concerts and such, but there was minimal activity during our stay. My biggest complaint is that the gate code changed and we didn't get any notice--so after a long day and a dinner out near Baltimore (nearly an hour away), I had to call the police to get back to my camper. Otherwise, the campsite was relatively spacious and quiet. The bugs were a little rough. Lots of whitetail running around.

Smallwood State Park Campground - TEMPORARILY CLOSED THROUGH JULY 2023

      Great Escape! Air conditioned cabins!

What a gem!  We found this place as an alternative to staying in DC during  4th of July festivities.  Nice spacious sites, cabins were super clean and smelled great!  Did I mention they were air conditioned during the hotest week of the summer!

      Bathrooms and showers were spotless.

Many things to see and do there. Historic property, big lake (no swimming), boating, fishing, hiking.  There is an Art Center with juried displays for sale.

      Ramblin' Pines

      Weak WiFi

For $90 per night the WiFi should work better. Didn’t connect at all. Had to use the antenna pointed East to get local Baltimore news.

      Cherry Hill Park

      My All Time Favorite…so far

This park is top notch. The grounds are immaculate. The staff is friendly and helpful. They have a lovely gift shop. We were in the 400 sites and it was nice and shady. Though you are close to highways I don’t recall hearing and noise. I love that they have shuttles to DC., walking trails and a large dog park. This is my all time favorite park so far and I need to go back.

      Washington DC / Capitol KOA

      Good location

Nice campground, maintained very well and clean. Laundry room and Propane fill on site so that was nice. RV Site was fairly level and easy to get into. Some sites are a bit close together and not long enough to keep your tow vehicle hooked up. A bit inconvenient if you’re only there for 1 night.

    Guide to Dunkirk

Cabin camping near Dunkirk, Maryland attracts visitors year-round to the Chesapeake Bay region. The area sits at low elevations, typically under 150 feet above sea level, with a humid subtropical climate featuring hot summers and mild winters. Campgrounds in this region often combine wooded settings with water access, creating opportunities for both forest and aquatic activities.

    What to do

Fossil hunting on beaches: Westmoreland State Park provides dedicated beaches for shark tooth hunting. "We came from Pa/De and wanted to look for sharks teeth. It was beautiful here so we decided to stay the night," notes Sara A. about her experience at Westmoreland State Park Campground.

Disc golf courses: Several parks offer disc golf as a low-cost activity during your cabin stay. "Pohick Bay is my go-to weekend camping spot. Just a few miles outside DC, Pohick Bay is a hidden gem in the area. I'd recommend taking in a game of disc golf on their 18 hole course," says Rachel L. about Pohick Bay Regional Park.

Kayaking in protected waters: Many cabins sit near creeks and rivers ideal for paddling. "Mattawoman Creek is right there and great for kayaking," explains Lorraine P. about their experience at Smallwood State Park. Most parks with water access rent basic kayaks for $15-25 per hour.

    What campers like

Private wooded sites: Campers appreciate cabins with natural separation and privacy. "Sites are very well spaced out and there are only 15 in the only camp loop. Sites are private with most having thick foliage and trees between them," shares Laure D. about Smallwood State Park Campground.

Clean shower facilities: Quality bathhouses make cabin stays more comfortable. "Bathrooms and showers are always clean. Full hookups at most sites. Staff very friendly," notes Matthew S. at Adventure Bound Washington DC.

Off-season quietude: Winter and early spring cabin visits offer a different experience. "Went in March 2018 for my birthday, when it was still VERY cold, but had a wonderful time. The beaches and trails seem so much more peaceful and untouched this time of year. Definitely gets windy near the river. Bath houses are heated which is amazing," writes RL about their winter stay at Westmoreland State Park.

    What you should know

Waterfront cabin limitations: Many waterfront cabin sites have restrictions. "The pier is still in need or repair, many lose boards, massive damaged pylons and still no security rails, to state a few," warns patricia S. about Endeavor Point.

Seasonal traffic patterns: Summer weekends can transform peaceful parks into busy hubs. "This campground is conveniently located in the middle of the DC / Annapolis area and has a lot to offer! There are plenty of options, both for RV's and in general and the staff is super friendly!" shares Philip T. about their stay at Adventure Bound Washington DC.

Tick and insect preparation: The humid climate supports active insect populations. "Oh - and check for ticks and bring your bug spray. Gotta love humid Virginia summers!" advises RL after camping at Westmoreland State Park.

    Tips for camping with families

Activity schedules: Some parks offer organized family programs throughout the week. "They informed us that they had a scavenger hunt for the kids going all weekend, they had an outdoor movie scheduled for Friday night, a campfire story time scheduled for Saturday night and crafts scheduled for Sunday morning," explains Ben G. about their stay at Bull Run Regional Park.

Water features for hot days: Swimming facilities become essential during summer months. "This campground has so much to offer. We loved it. Pros: 50 amp hook-up, Water, Sewer, Playground, Mini Golf, Swimming Pool, Hot tub, Basketball court," lists Beth R. from her experience at Cherry Hill Park.

Playground proximity: When booking cabins with children, consider location within the campground. "We got a site on the inner loop and it backed to the playground and the bathhouse. The site was spacious," notes Ben G. about Bull Run Regional Park's layout, making it easier to supervise children.

    Tips from RVers

Site levelness variations: Even within the same campground, site quality varies. "Camp site wasn't level at all. I was actually kind of worried that it would slide into the woods," reports Guerrmo from their stay at Washington DC / Capitol KOA.

City access considerations: Cabin stays can serve as bases for exploring DC. "This was a great stop to take the kids to visit the city. Easy access and well laid out sites. They have a bus stop for metro service to the city, but we took the 20 minute drive," explains Joe R. about Cherry Hill Park, noting the 20-minute drive to Washington DC.

Arrival timing: Some parks have limitations on check-in hours. "Do not try and come in after dark. Very tight and very dark," warns Matthew S. about Adventure Bound Washington DC, highlighting the difficulty of navigating some campgrounds after sunset.
