Tent camping options near Dowell, Maryland cluster along the Chesapeake Bay shoreline and Patuxent River, with several established tent campgrounds in natural settings. Calvert Cliffs State Park offers youth group tent camping with access to the park's famous fossil-hunting beach and walking trails. Matoaka Beach Cottages provides tent campsites with bay views and beach access. Endeavor Point features tent campsites situated on lawn areas with proximity to the Potomac River and fishing opportunities.

Most tent sites in the area feature basic amenities with varying levels of facilities. Calvert Cliffs provides drinking water, picnic tables, and toilets for tent campers, while sites remain open from March through October. Tent campers should note that alcohol is prohibited at several locations including Calvert Cliffs and Pax River Hog Point Campgrounds. Fire regulations vary between campgrounds, with fires permitted at most locations except Matoaka Beach. Tent campers often contend with seasonal insects, particularly at waterfront locations where one visitor noted they "left early due to an insane amount of bugs making the experience uniquely miserable."

The terrain for tent camping varies across the region, with some campgrounds offering more privacy than others. Tent sites at Endeavor Point are situated on open lawn areas with minimal separation between sites, while Matoaka Beach offers more secluded tent camping options. Many locations provide direct water access, making these tent campgrounds popular with fishers and fossil hunters. The beach areas serve as the main attraction for tent campers, with opportunities to find shark teeth and other fossils along shorelines. As described in feedback on The Dyrt, "The views are great. The hosts are friendly and helpful. Quite restful." Sandy Point State Park also offers youth group tent camping with beach access approximately 35 miles north of Dowell, providing another option for organized groups seeking a tent camping experience.

      Westmoreland State Park Campground

Lovely but busy spot. Campground A has hookups but you can also fit a camper into the standard sites. All sites have nice travel pads and fire rings. Campground b is basically an open field as of Nov 2026 recommend avoiding that area.

Greenbelt Park Campground — Greenbelt Park

Close to washington as we could get. Could also park our skoolie bus which was nice and had plenty of close by shower with bathrooms. Keep in mind only one shower per restroom house. We stayed at a pretty slow season so it wasn’t bad. Would recommend if visiting DC! They also have a dump station and water fill up.

      Annapolis MWR Academy RV/Campground

      Great spot for Retirees/Active

If you want to be near Annapolis, right on the Severn River...this is it. About 15 RV spots nestled in the woods...with full hook ups. A couple of primitive spots as well. Just a quick 5 min walk to the river...right across from the Academy. NEX, gas within 10 min walk, and 15 min drive to downtown Annapolis. Staff is always great here, and the park is clean....for a park on the woods.

      Campsites at Watkins Regional Park

Excellent choice for a Washington visit or local getaway

Based on my stay 3 nights and what I read of Greenbelt Park (the other closeby to Washington campground) I would say this has to be much better and I will stay here again on a future visit. Campground sits inside of a much larger park with great trails, amenities and well maintained. Campground is quiet, lots of trees, forest and yet each space is very large with good spacing and privacy to adjacent sites. High tree canopy at your site so lots of room to spread out. Sites themselves are a little rustic - a mix of grass, gravel and dirt, but not muddy (it rained a good bit prior to my stay) - but in good condition. Shower/toilet block is clean and good hot water and good water pressure. Most sites are flat or near flat and the ones that aren't need minimal levelling blocks. Campground apparently is never full and there was only 1 other when I was there - really hard to believe. There is a neighborhood road up by the sites near the shower block but it is low speed and lightly travelled and I had no disturbance from it. Nice surrounding neighborhood. No signs of vagrants. Park police patrolled multiple times per day and report very little non-camper entry to ther facilities. I felt very safe.Easy access to Eashington - bus stop outside the campground to metro or just drive to the metro (free parking weekend, $6 midweek) and then train (about 8 per hour) into the sites - an hour or less total to get there. For more local people, this seems like a good escape "to the woods" without travelling forever.

      Pettigrew WMA

Pettigrew WMA - great dispersed camping

Good spot to get away and pitch a tent. Never anyone else there too! Make sure to get a daily ($4) or annual (~$22 I forget) Access Permit on Virginia DWR, as well as special WMA camping license (free)

Smallwood State Park Campground - TEMPORARILY CLOSED THROUGH JULY 2023

      Great Escape! Air conditioned cabins!

What a gem!  We found this place as an alternative to staying in DC during  4th of July festivities.  Nice spacious sites, cabins were super clean and smelled great!  Did I mention they were air conditioned during the hotest week of the summer!

      Bathrooms and showers were spotless.

Many things to see and do there. Historic property, big lake (no swimming), boating, fishing, hiking.  There is an Art Center with juried displays for sale.

      Joint Base Andrews Military FamCamp

Could be a great campground but......

There are some good things about this Famcamp. It's like a diamond in the rough. If the military would spend some time and money on it, it could be a great campground. One of the greatest points about this campground is its location. You are so close to downtown D.C.! Every RV site (as far as I saw) was a level concrete pad. All sites, except for tent sites, have full electricity. Most sites have sewer and water. Sites 12-18 should be mainly used for the smaller travel trailers. I had an interesting time getting my 35' 5th wheel into the site. Even though I got my RV into the site, I don't have much room for my truck. My site has a picnic table, fire pit, and a grill. Everything is rusted beyond repair. My grill was filled with cigarette butts and my fire pit had trash in it. There is some shade. My site has two trees at the front of the pad on both sides of the RV. My bedroom stays nice and cold and I have a good view for my Starlink in the rear. The sites are close to each other, but there is some space. The good thing is that we are surrounded by the golf course. You don't get much noise from the base, because of the location, and because the FamCamp is surrounded by trees. You can hear the busy road outside the fence but I don't hear it much inside the RV. Every once in a while you'll hear an aircraft... but this is an air base, it's expected. We were told the community laundry was not working and to use the base laundry mat. Finally, one of the best parts about the campground, is the lady at outdoor rec that is in charge of the Famcamp. She is very nice and helpful. She will try to assist you with anything you need from directions to useful tips.

    Guide to Dowell

Tent campsites near Dowell, Maryland cluster predominantly around the western shores of Chesapeake Bay and along the Patuxent and Potomac Rivers. Seasonal camping typically runs from March through October, with most sites closing during winter months. Summer temperatures average 85-90°F with high humidity levels, creating challenging conditions for tent campers during peak season.

    What to do

Fossil hunting along shorelines: Calvert Cliffs State Park provides direct beach access for finding prehistoric shark teeth and other fossils. One visitor noted, "I was a TA on an optional field trip to Calvert Cliffs for an intro level class. I was a rainy day but we were able to go down to the shore and find fossils. What a great experience for (hopefully) future geologist."

Fishing and crabbing opportunities: Endeavor Point offers dedicated fishing piers and crabbing areas along the Potomac River. A camper reported, "The pier was perfect to fish or crab off of and the beach had great views of the sunrise."

Nature walks and hiking: Caledon State Park features a 3-mile trail leading to riverside camping areas. A visitor explained, "It's a nice 3 mile hike to the campsite which is right by the Potomac river! They have porta Johns and a pavilion close by. The beach is beautiful and we saw the most gorgeous sunset."

Birdwatching and wildlife viewing: Patuxent River watershed areas provide habitat for numerous bird species. According to one reviewer at Caledon, "Great bird watching and bald eagles" make this area particularly appealing for wildlife enthusiasts.

    What campers like

Private beach access: Matoaka Beach Cottages offers tent sites with exclusive shoreline access. A camper stated, "I just showed up and got a perfect camp spot with a view of the sunrise and access to the private beach."

Peaceful waterfront settings: Many tent sites feature direct views of the Chesapeake Bay. One visitor to Matoaka Beach noted, "We tent camped at Matoka Cabins and it was a beautiful Peaceful camping trip! Out spot was very private and you could see the bay and hear the waves."

Well-marked trails: Several parks maintain clear pathway systems for hikers. A visitor to Calvert Cliffs mentioned, "The trail now is very well marked, clean, and there are facilities down by the beach to use."

Firewood availability: Most campgrounds provide firewood for purchase through honor systems. At Caledon State Park, "Wood for sale at the site for $4 honor system. Porta pottie right next to wood pile."

    What you should know

Seasonal insect concerns: Waterfront locations experience significant bug activity, particularly during summer months. One camper at Pax River Hog Point stated they made "the decision to bail seeing as we weren't going to be getting any sleep between being eaten alive and serenaded."

Beach erosion issues: Several shoreline camping areas face ongoing erosion challenges. At Calvert Cliffs, a returning visitor noted, "Finally the beach is very beautiful even though every year it gets smaller and smaller."

Limited privacy at some sites: Endeavor Point and similar locations place tent sites in open areas. A camper observed, "The camping areas were all on the lawn, and the owners were a bit uptight about which site we could choose. The campsites aren't dispersed and are pretty small but that's the only downside."

Variable enforcement of fishing limits: Some campgrounds maintain their own catch restrictions. A frustrated angler at Endeavor Point commented, "The current owners have a 2-dozen limit on crabs regardless of having a license in Maryland that says you can catch up to a bushel."

    Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Several camping areas include dedicated children's facilities. At Calvert Cliffs, "The park has a great play ground right off the main parking lot for kids to play on as well as a few bathrooms."

Avoid peak summer weekends: Sandy Point State Park and similar areas become extremely crowded during summer holidays. A regular visitor advised, "The best times to go are winter, spring, and fall. Extremely over crowded in the summer."

Jellyfish awareness: Late summer brings challenging swimming conditions. One family noted, "August is the worst month to visit if you like the water. Jellyfish take over with a vengeance!"

Consider shoulder seasons: Spring visits allow for better experiences at popular locations. An experienced camper suggested, "We prefer to visit in late spring while school is still in session" to avoid crowds at beach camping areas.

    Tips from RVers

Limited hookup options: Most tent camping areas near Dowell offer minimal RV amenities. At Lacy Oasis Campground, tent sites predominate with only limited RV accommodation.

Military options available: Service members can access additional facilities. The United States Naval Academy FamCamp provides "cheap and close to Annapolis" camping with more RV-friendly setups, though a visitor noted it's "very spartan but great location."

Advance reservations essential: During peak season, securing spots requires planning. At Endeavor Point, even during off-peak times like Labor Day, visitors report "almost nobody else there" despite the prime location.

Consider day use instead: Some RVers report better experiences using campgrounds as day locations. One visitor noted, "It kind of felt like it was more appropriate for that kind of use" when observing how local families utilized Endeavor Point for daytime gatherings rather than overnight camping.
