Schoodic Woods Campground — Acadia National Park

Quiet Side of Acadia National Park

Acadia National Park is definitely one of our favorite National Parks and Schoodic Woods Campground adds to the awesome experience. This is the “Quiet Side” of Acadia which means way less crowds. The campground is divided into two loops A and B with campsites able to fit big-rigs to tents. Loop B has large pull-thru sites adequate to fit any size RV and has water and electric with sites being more open than Loop A. Loop A has a little more privacy between sites and does offer 30/50-amp electric but no water at the site. Many sites in Loop B are not level and we had a difficult time getting level in our site (B24). All the roads are paved and campsites are gravel with a large patio and fire pit and picnic table. Each loop has two bath houses, but be forewarned, there are NO showers in the campground (you have to drive to another campground nearby and pay for showers), nor is there a laundry facility. There are dish washing stations at the bathhouses with hot water. Park staff does a great job of keeping the bathrooms clean and camp hosts regularly clean campsites and fire pits. There is a hike-in tent section but, oddly, campfires (wood and charcoal) are not allowed but you can use butane. There is Wifi at bathrooms and Ranger Station. All sites have to be booked online and they will not make reservations at the ranger station.

We love this section of Acadia because there are far less crowds but you still have the beautiful coastline and plenty of hiking and biking opportunities. Hiking trails and the carriage roads are accessible right from the campground so you don’t have to drive anywhere. Frazier Point is a great place to launch a canoe or kayak, just be aware of the 10–12-foot tides and plan accordingly. The Musquito Harbor Brewery is a great place to go for pizza and beer after a morning exploring the park.

      Rest Ashore Cottages

Great waterfront getaway near the quiet side of Acadia National Park

If you are looking for a Maine coastal getaway in a beautiful location that is away from crowds, Rest Ashore Cottages are perfect. This property features ten relatively new cottages located right on a quiet bay along the beautiful Maine coast. Some are right on the water and others are set back a row but all have access to a private sandy and rocky beach. The cottages vary in bedrooms and size ranging from king beds to bunks and able to sleep up to six people. Cottages with bunks for kids provide toys and games for their enjoyment. Each cottage has an outdoor picnic table and BBQ grill. There is a shared fire pit and gathering area on the beach and multiple play areas for kids with digging equipment to keep them busy. Units are fully furnished with an array of kitchen appliances (some even have a dishwasher and washer/dryer) and include linens. Their website has a detailed description of what is included in each cottage and the sleeping arrangements. Their cancellation policy is great – if you cancel 30 days prior to arrival, you receive a one hundred percent refund.

The cottages are located a short drive to the Schoodic Woods section of Acadia National Park in Winter Harbor, known as the “Quiet Side” of Acadia. Be forewarned, this is not the main section of Acadia near Bar Harbor on Mt. Desert Island. This section of the park does have plenty of hiking and biking opportunities with miles of carriage roads and trails and plenty of gorgeous views of the rocky coastline. There are also many great picnic areas and places to paddle and fish. A great place to visit is the Schoodic Institute Visitor Center that has lots of history and information about Acadia, the Maine coastline, and the research facility. If you want to visit Bar Harbor, there is a ferry from Winter Harbor that takes you across the bay on a 45-minute boat ride. If you don’t have a car, the Island Explorer (a free bus service) will take you around the park and over to Bar Harbor. There is a small grocery in Winter Harbor and plenty of restaurants within a 10-minute drive.

      Narrows Too Camping Resort

      Comfortable and accommodating

This is our first time at Narrows Too, we fount the staff to be helpful. The sites are big enough to get large RV’s in. There were several 40’-45’ buses and fifth wheels at the campground. Some of the water facing sites are pretty snug but the pull through we had was perfect for us. We would definitely stay here again!

      Cottonwood Camping & RV Park

Great place for a few nights

Very friendly staff. Outdoor pavilion with chairs and TV. Great showers. Most sites are large and secluded with fire pits and tables. Dog Park in back. Wi-Fi is iffy at the site, good at the pavilion.

      Mt Desert Narrows Camping Resort

      Convenient to Acadia NP

Clean, water and electric only at the waterfront, but nice view. I didn't use the facilities so I can't comment on those. $55 a night with military discount and off season.

      HTR Acadia

      Great getaway

This is our first campground... I'd say the bathrooms are clean and the campground itself is pretty spacious when it comes to parking which isn't what I saw with alor of others. We extended our stay because its been the staff and environment has been really nice. We have site 35 which has been secluded and nice. We are going to 11 which has a partial waterfront view but not super close to water.

    Guide to Winter Harbor

Cabin options around Winter Harbor, Maine provide direct access to the Schoodic Peninsula section of Acadia National Park. The area averages 46-50 inches of annual rainfall with humid summers in the 70s and cold winters dropping below 20°F. The quiet side of Acadia offers cabin camping with fewer crowds than Bar Harbor but equally stunning coastal scenery.

    What to do

Explore tide pools at low tide: At Schoodic Woods Campground, you're just minutes from remarkable shoreline exploration. "Surrounding the campground are miles of biking and hiking trails that are easily accessible from your campsite. There is a six-mile loop that takes you along the beautiful rocky coast with views of lighthouses, islands, forests, and wetlands," explains one visitor.

Take the Island Explorer shuttle: The free shuttle system connects multiple campgrounds to park attractions. "The Acadia Island Explorer shuttle provides free transportation between various locations, island attractions, and towns (and is dog-friendly and can accommodate bikes). The shuttle operates from late June to mid-October and is a great way to get around if you don't have a car or want the hassle of parking," notes a Schoodic Woods reviewer.

Visit Corea for seafood: Acadia Seashore Camping and Cabins puts you near local fishing villages. One guest mentioned, "Corea Wharf was a great place to eat and LobStore is a good place to get fresh seafood!" Local seafood restaurants serve freshly caught lobster at better prices than Bar Harbor's tourist spots.

    What campers like

Private cabin sites: Smuggler's Den Campground offers varied cabin privacy levels. "Great for all types of camping. We've stayed here in a tent. There is a great playground and a nice pool with slide. Hiking trails connect to the back of the campground for access to Beech Mtn and Echo Lake beach," reports a camper.

On-site dish washing stations: Clean-up after meals is easier at campgrounds with dedicated facilities. At Schoodic Woods, "A dish-washing station is located at the bathrooms which is really handy and kept clean." This practical amenity saves water in your cabin and keeps food waste from attracting wildlife.

Waterfront cabin options: HTR Acadia offers waterfront cabin rentals with scenic ocean views. "We stayed at site A-49 on the edge of loop A. It was a good site with a large fire ring and was level," reports one visitor. The peaceful setting provides direct water access from select sites.

    What you should know

Cabin reservations essential: Summer cabins book months in advance, especially at national park locations. "It is best to reserve online as this park fills up and very rarely has a walk-up site. The ranger station will not make reservations over the phone so don't bother calling," advises a Schoodic Woods camper.

Shower facilities vary significantly: Many park cabins lack shower facilities. "The bathrooms have flush toilets and potable water but there are no showers or laundry facilities. There are some places in the nearby town of Winter Harbor that have shower facilities of which the ranger station has information on," notes a Schoodic visitor.

Bug protection required: The coastal environment supports active mosquito populations. "No matter if you wear long sleeves and long pants, plus use bug spray, the mosquitos are vicious. Between gnats and mosquitos, sitting outside to eat is nearly impossible," warns one camper at Schoodic Woods.

    Tips for camping with families

Cabin alternatives for larger groups: For families needing more space than standard cabins, Hadley's Point Campground offers family-sized accommodations. "The cabin contained a queen sized bed and a set of bunk beds. It also had a private bathroom with metered shower. 50 cents got you a hot, 7 minute shower, which was plenty of time!"

Kid-friendly amenities: Smuggler's Den Campground provides excellent recreation options. "Amazing campground. Staff is extremely friendly. Campground has a small camp store, a heated pool and children's pool, large home style gas grills with picnic area, horseshoe pits, a large playground for children and a large field for anything from badminton to football."

Activity planning: Mainstay Cottages & RV Park provides a quieter base for family exploration. "If you're looking for a camp site close to Acadia without the crowd, look to MainStay in Winter Harbor. About an hours drive to the main Acadia but just 5 minutes to the Schoodic Peninsula." This location balances access with fewer crowds.

    Tips from RVers

Site selection considerations: RV sites with cabin rentals nearby offer different privacy levels. "We incurred damage to our vehicle relying on the eyes/directions of an employee. The sites are very close together, some are shaded, some not. Our sewer dump was 3 ft or less from the neighbors fire pit," cautions an RVer at Hadley's Point.

Utilities and services: Different properties offer varying hookup options. "All sites have electric (20/30/50) and some have electric and water only reflected in cheaper prices," notes a Schoodic Woods visitor. Cabin renters should check which utilities are shared with RV sections.

Off-season availability: Some cabin rentals extend into shoulder seasons. "Stayed in one of their cabins out of season and really enjoyed it. Not far from the best Acadia hiking (like 20 minutes), has a nice view of the ocean, and the campground is well maintained and clean and everyone is very friendly," reports a visitor to Bar Harbor Oceanside KOA.
