Tent Camping near Portland, ME

Tent campsites near Portland, Maine range from established campgrounds with full amenities to more secluded walk-in sites. Sun Outdoors Saco Old Orchard Beach provides tent camping with access to beaches along the southern Maine coast, while Swans Falls Campground offers riverside tent sites approximately 50 miles northwest of Portland. Both locations maintain wooded settings that provide natural shade for tent campers seeking respite from summer heat.

Most tent campgrounds in the region feature dirt or pine needle-covered sites with some form of delineation between camping areas. Fire rings and picnic tables are standard at established locations like Mac's Camping Area, though primitive tent sites often require campers to bring their own water and waste disposal equipment. A recent review noted, "The bathrooms and showers were really clean and you constantly saw yellow-shirted people busily working." Seasonal availability varies, with many tent campgrounds operating from May through mid-October before closing for the winter months.

Areas farther from Portland typically offer deeper seclusion and less ambient noise for tent campers. The wooded tent sites at Webbs Mills Stead provide natural screening between campers, while walk-in tent locations like those at Huttopia Southern Maine require a short hike but reward with greater privacy. One camper mentioned that "highway noise nearby is noticeable without AC on or if tenting," highlighting the importance of location selection for tent campers seeking quiet surroundings. Most walk-in tent sites require carrying gear a short distance from parking areas, but this minor inconvenience is often balanced by superior site quality and reduced crowding. Primitive tent camping areas throughout the region typically provide basic amenities like fire pits and access to hiking trails while maintaining a more authentic outdoor experience than developed RV campgrounds.

      Sea-Vu West Premier RV Resort

      Pleasantly surprised.

This campground is mostly seasonal, privately owned park models, but has 45 spaces for RV’s. I was a little skeptical about staying at this campground with so many park models and seasonals but was pleasantly surprised at how nice, clean, and tidy all the sites were. They obviously take pride in how things look because the grounds and campsites were very well-kept.

All campsites are 50/30-amp full hook-up with level gravel pads with grassy patios, a picnic table, and fire pit. We stayed in site#702 which was long enough for our 45’ motorhome and tow car. All the utilities were easy to reach and the electric worked well. The only problem was that we were parked under a large oak tree that was profusely shedding large acorns. There are some sites that are in the open which I would definitely choose, if I came back in the fall. The campground is gated which is a nice feature. It is located a mile or so off Route 1 which means you don’t get the road noise and traffic, but still conveniently located near shops and restaurants.

One nice feature are the shaded walking trails in the park. While they are not super long, it is a nice change from walking the roads (which are paved). Other amenities include a decent size swimming pool (closed while we were there), a basketball court, playground, laundry, and camp store.  I thought it was a little expensive at $75/night (for full hook-up) at the end of the season, especially since the pool was closed.

      Sun Outdoors Wells Beach

Tight sites and expensive, busy area along the Maine coast

We stopped here in the summer to check out the coastal towns in southern Maine. There are many campgrounds in the area and we chose this one because they had a 25% off coupon (on a 7-night stay) which gave us the best nightly price in the area. However, the nightly rate was still$74/night, one reason being they charge a “resort fee” of$15/day which is ridiculous. This is a typical resort-style campground with lots of amenities (most of which we never use). But, for some people, this is a destination campground because of all the amenities- a large heated swimming pool, basketball courts, sand volleyball, bocce, fitness center, two playgrounds, 18-hole minigolf (that you pay extra for), and more.

The campsites in the front of the park are sandwiched between the swimming pool and Route 1 which is very busy and noisy. Campsites in the far back portion of the campground are shaded and a much quieter section. Camping pads and patios are a mix of gravel and sand. Many sites have shade and some have an astroturf patio (I think those are “premium” sites). Our campsite was in the middle section which was fairly quiet but the sites are close together with no privacy. The site was a long and level pull thru with a gravel pad and gravel/sand patio. All sites have a picnic table and fire pit.

There is a tent-only section and they have renal cabins. There is lots to do for families in the area including the beach and amusement and water parks. Restaurants of all sorts are nearby. You can easily walk to Congdon’s Donuts which is a Maine classic.

Shore Hills Campground & RV Park

Been coming here for years and always enjoy it.

We’ve camped here for over fifteen years and always have a great experience. The campground has nice sites, water access, nature preserves and hiking within a short distance and is close to Boothbay Harbor and many other beautiful coastal Maine Towns. Since we have a big-rig, we choose to stay in the full hook-up section in the front (sites 100-149) that has long level pull thru and back-in sites. The only downside of this section is that the sites are in the open with few trees for shade and no privacy between sites. Some sites have a wooden deck on the patio with a railing around it and others have a grassy/gravel patio. RV’s 36’ or less have more choice for sites whether you want shade in the woods or waterfront. Hookups are variable (regarding electric) so be sure to check the map before picking a campsite. A dump station is located in the front of the campground. There are two bathhouses (each with laundry) that are at both ends of the park. Waterfront sites are beautiful with a view of the marsh and tidal river. Just be aware that the tides are 10-12 feet and when the tide is out, you are looking at a mudflat. There are also tent sites that are nicely wooded. Access to the park is easy off the main road and the roads within the campground are easy to navigate. The campground accepts cash or check only. There is no online booking, you either call them directly or fill out a form and mail it to them. There is a kayak launch and the campground does have boats for rent. A great amenity is the shuttle that takes you to downtown Boothbay Harbor since the parking downtown is expensive.

Sun Outdoors Saco Old Orchard Beach

      Good for kids

I have stayed in about 20 campgrounds in the past two months and this was by far the loudest despite being pretty empty. Kids screeching and screaming for about 6 hours a day, including weekdays. Had one come knocking on my door while I was working to try and sell keychains. Some uncontrollable dogs in our loop as well. Despite the lack of peace, the campground itself was in good shape and had a lot of amenities.

      Powder Horn Family Camping Resort

      Great Place

Very Clean. They mow something everyday. Asphalt roads. Easy access to every spot. Extra clean showers and restrooms. They have activities for all ages. But no dog park. Why not? They have plenty of room.

      Colonial Mast Campground

      Mostly permanent RVs

It's a cute campground with a beach and boat dock. Laundry, pool, showers all available but I didn't use them.

      Cozy campground

Water and electricity only at sites. Dump station available. Fire pit, table and trees at most sites. Lots of trees and peace here.

      York Beach Camper Park

      Cozy and clean

Get a site in the back with the trees if possible. They are much bigger sites and more secluded. Cash only ($61) but there is an ATM in the office. The manager was very helpful giving me a local map and telling me the sites to see. She recommended a few restaurants for great food.

    Guide to Portland

Tent camping opportunities near Portland, Maine range from established campgrounds to primitive sites across the region. Sun Outdoors Saco Old Orchard Beach offers tent sites with amenities including showers, toilets and drinking water, located just minutes from coastal attractions. Swans Falls Campground, situated near Fryeburg along the Saco River, provides a more rustic tent camping experience with fire rings and picnic tables but fewer amenities.

Most tent campsites in the Portland region feature dirt or grass pads with varying levels of shade from the tall pine trees common to Maine's forests. Walk-in tent sites tend to offer more privacy and seclusion compared to drive-in areas where sites may be closer together. Many tent-focused campgrounds like Mac's Camping Area provide drinking water, fire rings, and picnic tables, though amenities decrease at more primitive locations. A recent review noted, "The staff was very friendly and when I called to book the site, they assisted in helping us pick out the nicest campsite." Seasonal considerations affect availability, with most campgrounds operating from May through mid-October before Maine's colder temperatures arrive.

Areas farther from Portland's urban center offer deeper seclusion and better opportunities for primitive tent camping experiences. The Poland and West Poland region features several tent campgrounds with varying levels of development, some with boat-in access for paddlers seeking waterfront sites. Tent campers should consider the proximity to hiking trails and water activities when selecting locations, as these natural features enhance the camping experience. One camper shared that "the bathrooms were the cleanest I've seen camping," referring to facilities at an established campground, though primitive tent sites typically have vault toilets or no facilities at all. For those seeking solitude, weekday visits and shoulder season camping (early May or late September) typically offer quieter experiences at walk-in tent locations throughout the region.
