Sandyshore Campground — Kanopolis State Park

    Primitive!

This campsite is truly primitive only. There were no RV’s taking up space. There were good separate spots that included a fire pit and a table. The fire pit in our spot was up next to the shoreline where we didn’t want it so we built one with a hole and rocks. It did get a bit windy but we put the Jeep behind us so that blocked some wind. This site is not near any hiking so you will have to drive to the hiking spot.

    Lucas Park

    Just gorgeous!!

While we didn’t think we’d find anything as great as our Ft Benning stay, this one is! Different purpose - Ft Benning is for hiking, trail running. This one is for water. The sites in the 10s with water/electricity have water within close walking distance but no hookup. The water/electricity in the 40s have water hookup. the lake is gorgeous and since we are here on a Wednesday, it is super quiet. While there are others here, we are all so far apart it feels like we’ve got the lake to ourselves. #12 is flat, no leveling blocks required. It is fairly packed large gravel. Electricity has been steady/dependable. The bathhouse is a one stall/one shower deal for men and women.

    Triple J RV Park

Nice Stop But Loud Next To Interstate

This is a nice spacious campground off of 70, very easy access to the interstate. The sites are roomy and have full hookups and covered picnic areas. The staff is very friendly and helpful! The cons are that it is right next to the interstate, thus, the noise is exceptionally loud and it was difficult to get a good nights sleep. The grounds could be cleaned up as well as there are pieces of trash and dog poop in the grass. It is a nice little place to stay for the night passing through but could use some improvements.

    Triple J RV Park

    Good for overnight

We called ahead to see if they had sites available for the night. Arrived just before the office closed at 7pm. Got a pull-through full-hookups site. The campsite pads are level, nice and wide, gravel like the roads, with wide grassy/dirt/gravel areas between and beautiful mature shade trees everywhere. Also several friendly cats acting as camp hosts, welcoming us at the office when we checked in, greeting us every time we stepped out of our rig, and checking out all the campsites and trees regularly. ☺️ Our site had a picnic table and a clay/Terra cotta statue of a bear eating honey, with a hole in his belly as a small fire ring. Most sites had a covered picnic table. Full hookups worked fine.

Bathrooms were ok; dead crickets on the floor.

    We would stay here again.

    Lucas Park

Well Maintained Campground Amidst Rolling Kansas Hills

I took a detour off the flat highway land in search of the town of Lucas where I had heard great things about their art installations. As I drove along the land began to open up to large rolling hills and beautiful landscaping with a turnoff just off the main road marked by some very interesting stones and a pavilion. I took a moment to pull off and noticed a kiosk which told the history of the area and some very impressive information about Lucas Park.

I was impressed by the information and one of the signs detailing the trails which led from just outside of the campground all the way to a very special cliffside which is renowned in the state of Kansas. So naturally I had to go check it out!!

Pulling into camp it had rained recently and some of the gravel roads were a bit slick for my small car, but I did notice they had some road work signs where they are working to improve these areas. The rest of the property was well developed and had great improvements including full service restrooms which were placed throughout camp and nice playground equipment for the kiddos.

The campground is divided into two separate areas. Each with their own unique appeal. I personally liked the campground closest to the pay station as it seemed to have better overall access to amenities such as community water. There was a good mix of campsites at this location with pull through and back in options with sites ranging vastly in overall spacing.

As a tent camper, I typically look for shaded areas which provide a little shelter from the elements and they did have several of these in this campground. Water access to the lake was also very close by although I didn’t see a swimming beach at the time of my visit. This could have been in part due to the rains and the lake levels or it could be that there indeed was not one in this area.

I had decent cell signal at this campground on AT&T.

    **TIPS: **

    • On weekends make sure to book in advance, the lake is one of the biggest draws of the area.
    • Drive into town and check out the“US Largest Toilet Bowl” art installation,“Garden of Eden” and the downtown district where you can find a few unique pieces. Don’t forget to stop off and try some of the famous Lucas bologna.
    • Check out the trail on the property to the rocks!

Convenient location. Accommodating staff. Well lit. Good dog run. We stopped in early November and Kansas was already cold and windy!

Eagle Point Campground — Kanopolis State Park

Small Camp Ground but great views

This is a small camp ground with electric hook ups only. Great views of the lake. What really makes this park is all the hiking, biking and horse riding trails. Literally miles and miles of trails with some of the best rock formations you will find in Kansas. There is also a larger camp ground set back from the lake, that is larger and has pins for horses.

    Triple J RV Park

Lovely owners, cute spot, convenient everything

Called Sunday of July 4 weekend and the owners answered. Late check in was zero issue. Super friendly folks and their pets are sweet as can be! Walked 5 mins up to Meridy’s for dinner and had one of the best steaks of my life. For just passing through, I couldn’t ask for a better quality stop.

Guide to Ellinwood

Glamping near Ellinwood, Kansas offers a mix of primitive and modern camping options across several state parks and private facilities. The region sits within the Smoky Hills physiographic region, characterized by rolling terrain, exposed Dakota sandstone, and elevations ranging from 1,500 to 1,800 feet. Summer temperatures typically reach 90-100°F with high humidity, while spring and fall provide milder conditions ideal for outdoor exploration.

What to do

Hiking limestone formations: At Kanopolis State Park Eagle Point Campground, visitors can explore unique geological features. "Trails with cliffs, creeks and caves, campsites with incredible views and Bald Eagles soaring overhead," notes one camper who enjoyed the park's natural attractions.

Paddleboarding on clear water: Lucas Park offers pristine water conditions ideal for paddlesports. A visitor mentioned, "Water is crystal clear and affords people the opportunity to swim fish boat etc." Kayak launches are accessible from multiple points around the shoreline.

Wildlife observation: The region hosts diverse bird species, particularly at shoreline sites. Bald eagles are frequently spotted at Eagle Point Campground during winter months, while songbirds populate the wooded campsites throughout spring and summer.

What campers like

Secluded waterfront sites: The primitive camping areas provide natural surroundings with direct water access. At Sandyshore Campground, campers appreciate the balance of nature and convenience: "Perfect mix of shade and shoreline. Beautiful views. The closest restroom is 1/2 a mile away up in Buzzard Bay though."

Affordable options: Some areas offer free camping on certain days. One Lucas Park visitor noted, "The primitive campsites were free Monday evening through Wednesday evening. Vault toilets were clean and there was a trash dumpster at the end of each loop."

Spacious campsites: Many glamping locations provide ample space between sites. A camper at Lucas Park mentioned, "Each campsite in the Point area we were in had a lot of room around it. We were up on the top of cliffs so got plenty of wind."

What you should know

Seasonal crowds: Weekends draw larger crowds, particularly at waterfront sites. A Sandyshore Campground camper advised: "For how popular this spot is, they need to build one closer to the campground. Also wish they would make these spots reservable as they fill up very quick since they are first come first serve. Especially on weekends."

Weather conditions: High winds can affect campsites, particularly those on elevated areas. Sites near the water may offer more shelter from prevailing winds. Summers bring hot, humid conditions with temperatures frequently exceeding 90°F.

Bathroom access: Facilities vary widely between campgrounds and specific sites. Some primitive areas have limited restroom access, as one camper noted about Sandyshore: "The closest restroom is 1/2 a mile away up in Buzzard Bay though."

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Triple J RV Park provides family-friendly amenities close to glamping accommodations. A visitor mentioned appreciating "convenient location. Accommodating staff. Well lit. Good dog run."

Beach activities: Several locations offer swimming beaches with gradual entry points suitable for younger children. These areas typically feature picnic facilities and shade structures for family meals.

Tick prevention: Bring appropriate repellent during warmer months. One camper at Sandyshore warned: "Great scenery and nice trails (bring tick spray can be brutal out there!). My girlfriend and I were able to take our paddle boards out which was a ton of fun and with the heavy boat traffic."

Tips from RVers

Level sites available: Wolf Pond Park and other locations provide level pads for larger rigs. Most glamping areas feature gravel pads that require minimal leveling equipment.

Highway noise considerations: When selecting sites, consider proximity to major roads. One Triple J camper noted: "There's a lot of highway noise, which should be expected since it's extremely close to I70. This was a handy and reasonably priced stop on our cross country journey."

Hookup variations: Different campgrounds offer varying levels of service. A Triple J visitor reported: "The sites are long and the utility hookups are good." Most glamping accommodations include at minimum electrical service, with full hookups available at select locations.
