Cottonwood Campground — Kanopolis State Park

Dead wood lies scattered throughout this lakeside campground, making firewood collection easy for campers who arrive prepared to gather their own fuel. Cottonwood Campground sits within Kanopolis State Park along Kansas's oldest reservoir, where 24 miles of hiking trails extend across the north side and petroglyphs mark evidence of the area's Native American history.

The campground provides full hookups with electric, water, and sewer connections at each of the 16 sites, though space comes at a premium. Jane G. notes that "sites were small and had trees extremely close to the camp pad" with limited vehicle parking space. The proximity of campsites to the access road requires particular attention for pet owners, as the narrow buffer zone between camping areas and vehicle traffic creates safety concerns.

Lake access draws many visitors for swimming and fishing, with multiple fish species native to Kansas waters available year-round. The shower facilities show their age but remain functional, and staff maintain the grounds consistently. Campers can explore places to camp around Marquette for additional options, or consider nearby Sumac Campground for a different layout within the same park system.

Visitors often highlighted the clean, well-maintained facilities and full hookups, though a few reviews mentioned space constraints at some sites. The lake offers excellent recreation with rich historical attractions nearby.

Lovely lake

Well maintained sites. Amazing swimming area. Helpful staff. Reasonable rates. Historical attractions nearby. We visited in the fall so lake wasn't very busy. Showers are dated but were reasonably clean

We stayed here Friday ,March 22-Sunday24,2019

The campground was ok. Sites were small and had trees extremely close to the camp pad. Parking for your vehicle was poor. The good thing was all sites(16) in Sumac have all 3 utilities, which in a State Park is quite a few. However, the placement of the sewer was a Awkward if you have a backend bathroom..On a very sad note our 11 year JRT was struck & killed directly in front of our camper , he has always been a good , stay in camp dog, put this sites are not big on space between camper& road. Keep your dogs CHAINED , in a cage or in the camper. No space to catch a runaway before they get to the road.

Simple cheap and enjoyable

Quiet and lovely a clean place to camp with plenty of dead and dry fire wood to be gathered. this place has up to 24 miles of hiking trails on the north side as well as being the oldest lake in the state it has some unique history from ancient Indians and the area was frequented by Buffalo bill Cody and there aresome petroglyphs you can visit from natives of the area this lake is also a great fishing destination for all types of fish native to the state if tents and hammocks are not your thing they have cabins as well for $99 a night this is one of them lakes you should visit if your not from Kansas there is so much hidden beauty here that goes unnoticed by many
