    SUMMARY PRESENTED BYT-Mobile

Campgrounds around Iowa City, Iowa range from developed sites with full amenities to more primitive options along waterways. The area features several Corps of Engineers facilities including Sugar Bottom Campground and West Overlook Campground, both located near Coralville Lake approximately 10 miles north of Iowa City. F.W. Kent Park in Oxford offers tent and RV camping with electric hookups in a natural setting with prairie grasses and ponds. Lake Macbride State Park maintains both modern and primitive campgrounds with varying levels of amenities, providing options for different camping preferences within a 15-mile radius of Iowa City.

Access to most campgrounds in the Iowa City area remains consistent year-round, though several facilities operate seasonally from mid-April through mid-October. The region experiences typical Midwestern seasonal variations with hot, humid summers and cold winters that limit camping opportunities. Many campgrounds require reservations, particularly during summer weekends and University of Iowa football game days when sites fill quickly. Flooding can affect accessibility, especially at locations near the Cedar River and Iowa River. Most campgrounds provide electric hookups, with some offering full hookups for RVs, while primitive tent sites are available at select locations. A visitor noted that "when the Cedar River is high, it pushes Chicken Creek out of its banks which can mean potential closure of campgrounds."

Waterfront camping represents a significant draw in the region, with multiple sites offering access to Coralville Lake, Lake Macbride, and the Iowa River. Campers frequently mention the fishing opportunities, with boat ramps available at several locations including Tailwater West and East Campgrounds. The Devonian Fossil Gorge near the Coralville Dam provides unique geological exploration opportunities. Several campgrounds feature hiking trails through wooded areas and restored prairie habitats that attract diverse wildlife. With over 130 campgrounds near Iowa City, campers can choose from secluded tent sites to full-service RV parks, making it an ideal destination for both weekend getaways and extended camping trips. According to one camper, Sugar Bottom is "a great campground if you want to mountain bike, kayak, boat, hike, fish, play disc golf or just enjoy the view of the lake." Sites vary in privacy levels, with some campgrounds offering more secluded spots lined with tall prairie grasses and trees, while others have more open layouts with less separation between neighboring campsites.

Summit Cabin 2, West Lake Park

      Front-Porch Perch Above Railroad Lake

If sleeping on the ground has begun losing some of its charm, Summit Cabin 2 at West Lake Park offers a pretty compelling alternative. Perched atop a rolling prairie hillside overlooking Railroad Lake, this modern 1.2K sq ft cabin combines the serenity of camping with enough creature comforts that you might briefly forget you're supposed to be 'roughing it'. Managed by the Scott County Conservation Board, the cabin is ADA-accessible, sleeps up to eight and sits within a 620-acre county park encompassing 4 lakes, giving you plenty of nature outside the door without surrendering air conditioning, indoor plumbing or a proper mattress at the end of the day.

Inside, this place is impressively equipped with two bedrooms - one with a queen bed plus twin bunks and a second room with a queen - a queen sleeper sofa, full kitchen with stove/oven, refrigerator, microwave and dishwasher, dining table for eight, modern bathroom with shower, Wi-Fi, gas fireplace, heat and air conditioning. Outside you'll find a covered porch overlooking the lake, picnic table, fire ring and gas grill, with parking for 2 vehicles. The kitchen even includes dishes, cookware and utensils, although you'll need to bring your own bedding, pillows, bath towels and toiletries. Pets aren't permitted, which is worth remembering before Fido hops into the truck expecting a weekend at the lake.

The real advantage, though, is everything waiting beyond the front porch. West Lake Park offers four lakes for fishing and recreation, a seasonal swimming beach, boat dock, accessible fishing dock, paddleboat rentals, playgrounds, trails, disc golf and seasonal concessions. For forgotten groceries or something worthy of tossing onto that gas grill, nearby Hy-Vee Grocery Store on West Locust Street is a convenient Davenport resupply option; you're also close enough to the Quad Cities that civilization never feels particularly far away.

Insider's tips? Here's a handful: (1) Bring a couple of lawn chairs because that covered porch overlooking Railroad Lake begs for morning coffee and an evening sundowner, but it's in the shade - if you want to grab some proper dawn or dusk light, you'll need to bring your own seat; (2) pack all bedding and bath linens, because those aren't provided; (3) bring fishing rods and take advantage of the park's four lakes, or make a day of the swimming beach and paddling opportunities during warmer months; (4) Firewood is available for purchase inside the park, saving you from hauling your own; (5) Remember that only two vehicles may park at the cabin, although overflow parking is nearby (like literally 20 yards from the VIP parking you'll find here at the cabin); and (5) Don't arrive expecting to pitch an extra tent beside the cabin as tents and campers aren't permitted within the cabin area.

      Happy Camping!

      West Overlook Campground

      So may options!

I rolled in on a Tuesday with no reservation and got a fantastic site. It was easy to reserve online after I picked one out. The site is really clean and there is easy access to the water in just a short walk. The shower house and facilities are nice and it is cheaper than most state parks I stopped at on this trip. I would stay here again!

Summit Campground - West Lake Park

      Nice county park

Stayed one night as passing thru, has lots of pull thru sites, FHU, and 30/50 amp. Great bathrooms, some shaded sites. Kinda crazy, pulled into gate 5 to check if had available site, was told, had to go into gate 1, pick an open site, and then go back to gate 5 to pay!!! Thankful the ranger, who we followed into campground, set up, and were able to pay ranger, thus did not need to disconnect our tow car! Can book in advance online which would be easier, but we were winging the one night stay.

      Pinicon Ridge Park

      My 2nd visit to Pinicon

One of my favorites. Iowa knows how to do County campgrounds. Firefly campground has full hookups and reservations. The other campgrounds have water and electric and are first come first serve. I arrived on a Friday afternoon in July and found a site easily.

      Palisades-Kepler State Park Campground

      Very Quiet

The campground was very nice and clean.  Rangers made several loops around so we felt safe.  Saw plenty of wildlife.  Campsites were big but not level.  We thought they only had outhouses until we discovered a modern bathhouse at the other end of the campground.  Showers were big but very shall rustic.  We only stayed one night as we were passing through but definitely could be an option in the future for other stays.

      Linder Point Campground

      Quiet and VERY clean

Good spacing between spots that have oversized cement slabs. The bath/shower rooms are the cleanest I have even witnessed.

There is a bike trail running just outside the campground.

      Hills, trees and water.

Modern North Campground — Lake Macbride State Park

      Three nights in early July

We really liked the nearby trails and the beach area was lovely. Our dogs lived hiking to the spillway and laying down for a soak. Our site (35) was slanted and wished we had more shade since it was in the upper 80s while we were there. Site 38 would be great for full shade and more privacy. Next time.

      Firefly Campground at Pinicon Ridge

      Great camping

Just an overnight stay but I want to return to Firefly. There are lots of fireflies at night so easy to see why it got the name. All the pads are concrete in this new park. Full hookups that are easy to use. Great playground for the kids.

    Guide to Iowa City

Camping sites near Iowa City primarily cluster around the Coralville Lake area, with elevations averaging 700-750 feet above sea level. Most campgrounds operate from April through October, though several remain open year-round with reduced services during winter months. The Coralville Dam complex forms the centerpiece of the region's outdoor recreation system, creating diverse camping options within a 15-mile radius of downtown.

    What to do

Fossil hunting at Devonian Gorge: Located near West Overlook Campground, the limestone gorge features an interpretive trail with visible marine fossils. "Beautiful view of the water. Very clean and well run COE. Also very nice place to find fossils among the back rocks," notes a visitor to Tailwater West.

Paddling opportunities: The Iowa River and Coralville Lake provide multiple access points for kayaks and canoes. At Lake Macbride State Park, campers can launch from several locations. "Nice grassy sites near lake for fishing, hiking, wildlife viewing. Near Iowa Raptor Project that conducts raptor programs and site with walking tour and live raptors," reports one camper.

Winter recreation: While many campgrounds close seasonally, some remain open year-round. "We enjoy the peace and quiet especially with the views of the lake and the fall colors," mentions a West Overlook Campground visitor who camped during the off-season.

    What campers like

Multiple camping loops with different experiences: At Sugar Bottom Campground, the variety of camping sections appeals to different preferences. "Very nice COE campground north of Iowa City in the Lake Coralville area. Beautiful setting, lots of options for sites," explains one reviewer who appreciated the campground's layout.

Proximity to Iowa City: Many Iowa City campgrounds function as affordable basecamps for University of Iowa events. "It is also a nice and inexpensive basecamp for folks visiting Iowa City or the University of Iowa, only about a 15-20 minute drive away," notes a camper from West Overlook.

Fishing access: Multiple campgrounds offer direct fishing opportunities. At Tailwater East Campground, "Small but lots of fishing! Hot showers, very clean bathrooms, fish cleaning stations, some concrete pads, some gravel." The campground positions anglers directly below the dam where fish tend to concentrate.

    What you should know

Uneven terrain at some campgrounds: Several Iowa City area campgrounds feature sloping sites. At Beyonder Getaway at Sleepy Hollow, "The land is not flat. The spots are good and most are pull-throughs but some are too short for a 30' camper," warns one RVer who stayed there for several weeks.

Differences between modern and primitive options: Campground amenities vary significantly. "This park has two campgrounds. The modern side on the north end of the park with full hookups, and the primitive side on the south side of the park with no electricity or water hookups," explains a Lake Macbride camper.

University event impacts: Football weekends and university events create reservation challenges. When staying at West Overlook, a camper noted, "Reservations are a must," highlighting the competition for sites during peak times and university events.

    Tips for camping with families

Playground options: Several campgrounds feature kid-friendly facilities. At F.W. Kent Park, "This campground has many beautiful spots to camp. There were also a few playgrounds that my grandkids loved," shares a visitor, highlighting the family-friendly atmosphere.

Wildlife viewing opportunities: The Coralville Lake area supports diverse animal populations. "Beautiful place... saw wild turkeys and dear almost ever day walking the camp grounds," reports a tent camper who spent extended time at Lake Macbride State Park.

Swimming beaches: Multiple campgrounds offer designated swimming areas. "Great campground, cheap sites with electric and water even for tent campers. Fantastic amenities including hot showers and nice bathrooms and a cleaning station with sink basin for camping dishes. Great beach swimming area," notes a Sugar Bottom visitor.

    Tips from RVers

Electric site availability: Most Iowa City campgrounds offer electric sites with varying amperage options. At Primitive South Campground at Lake Macbride, despite the name, there are electric hookups. "This is for the primitive southern camp site at lake macbride, iowa. Their is a modern campsite on the north side as well," clarifies a reviewer who documented the sometimes confusing campground naming conventions.

Dump station locations: Several campgrounds feature sanitary stations. West Overlook campers note, "They have a double-hole dump station that can be accessed in both directions." This practical information helps RVers plan their arrival and departure strategies.

Senior discounts: Many Corps of Engineers campgrounds around Iowa City offer significant price reductions. "This is a COE Park so you also can get a discount with your Senior Pass," mentions a Sugar Bottom camper, referencing the 50% discount available to America the Beautiful Senior Pass holders.
